Chitumbuka, along with other Malawian languages (except Chichewa/Chinyanja), was marginalised by the dictatorial regime of President Banda (1964-1994).
One of the fruits of the post-Banda political dispensation has been the freedom to form language and cultural associations - and the Chitumbuka Language and Culture Association (CLACA) is one example.
In keeping with this role, CLACA has made a number of pronouncements aimed at determining, for example, what the "real" Chitumbuka is; who the "genuine" speakers of Chitumbuka are; and what culturally corrosive issues should be excluded from Chitumbuka-medium textbooks; and so on.

My hope and prayer is that the building of the mausoleum on Kamuzu’s grave will mark the beginning of a long process of putting the country’s history in its proper perspective.
I am asking this question because Kamuzu’s biography as espoused by the public broadcaster, MBC, does not show how the former leader, who was very much at home with Chitumbuka, could have mastered the language.
I have heard that Kamuzu spent a good two or so years at Khondowe in Rumphi for his early primary school education.
All of the groups that have moved into the area over the last centuries have adopted this language, including the Ngoni of South Africa who conquered the Tumbuka in the mid 19th century.
Pray that literature will be made available in Chitumbuka, the heart language of the Tumbuka.

The one thing that did crack them up was when any of us would speak Chitumbuka.
Though Kevins was an old excuse, Asa, one of the Swedish students here last term, had the best excuse I have ever heard.
(The greens are fried with onions and tomatoes and used to flavor the staple corn porridge called nsima.) I answered in Chitumbuka (which was probably most of why they found it funny): I am not beautiful so I have no woman.

Malawi is approaching a positive decision regarding mother tongue instruction in Primary Schools, and the German Technical Co-operation Agency GTZ has just completed a publication entitled "Towards a National Language Policy in Education", being the proceedings of the First National Symposium on Language Policy Formulation.
It focusses on the Malawian languages Chiyao, Chitumbuka, Chilomwe and Chisena.
Another publication available is a sociolinguistic survey which gives interesting insights into the interdependences of linguistics and education within the Malawian context.
Two years ago, the Malawis fueled my faith as we worshiped, developed friendships, and learned together in the spiritually rich but remote and economically poor country of Malawi, Central Africa.
Once again, the world was made smaller as the Malawis crossed the ocean to teach workshops and to share their culture and Chitumbuka language with us in Oklahoma.
As I look through the eyes of faith, our paths, yours and mine included, have crossed for a reason.

The Centre's main responsibility, is to promote and develop Malawian languages.
To do this, the Centre will conduct research/ consultancy in Malawian languages such as Chichewa, Chitumbuka, Chiyao, Chisena, Chiitonga, Chilomwe etc. The Centre also recognises the Educational, Social, Economic and Political importance of non-African languages like English, French, German, Portuguese, Spanish and others.
It will, therefore, carry out research and consultancy in these areas as well.
