Chia was a former member of the now defunct political party Barisan Sosialis and a former Member of Parliament of Jurong Constituency.
In the same year, Chia Thye Poh led a demonstration of supporters to the Parliament House and handed a letter to the Clerk of Parliament, demanding a General Election, the release of all political detainees, and the revocation of all "undemocratic" laws.
However, Chia refused as he felt that signing this document would imply that he was affiliated with the CPM and had intention to cause instability in Singapore.

Chia was finally released from prison in 1989 under the condition that he remain confined on the tourist resort island of Sentosa, where he worked in a converted souvenir stand as assistant curator of the museum.
An unapologetic Chia was later sent home and now lives with his father but is forbidden to be employed, travel abroad, issue public statements, or associate with other former detainees without ISD approval.

Chia Thye Poh, a parliamentarian and a member of the People's Action Party (PAP) - the only party that has ruled Singapore since its independence from British rule in 1961 - became disillusioned with the direction of PAP and, with 12 other parliamentarians, decided to form a new group in 1966.
Chia was held under the Internal Security Act, a law inherited from the former British colonial administration and subsequently strengthened by PAP.
And Chia is only one of many former political detainees, some of whom are now living in exile.

As I recall later, one thing from the play which I feel has really made an impression is a particular line spoken by one of the characters, Zainal, a Malay army guy, in response to his Chinese camp mate's effort to confront the Army policy.
But then, to declare that even Chia has given up is like bursting the illusion of a fighting spirit, or the thought that we could have one.

Chia Thye Poh, a member of Parliament, was brought up on charges of being a communist when he formally protested Lee's harassment of his party.
Chia now lives in exile for political crimes.
Last year's Asia Watch human rights survey listed Lee's government as engaging in "a systematic campaign to destroy both civil society and the rule of law." The group has implicated Lee's government in the abuse of the Catholic Church, welfare organizations, the national university, media correspondents, and opposition political parties.
