It was originally conjunction with the police bureau of Chiayi county, observing the document no. 174204, November 29, 1992, and it was then bisected from the police bureau of Chiayi county on January 1, 1992.
Subordinating to Chiayi city government, our bureau is under the supervison of th police superintendent department, whose obligations are to preserve societal peace, to maintain societal security, to prevent damages from happening, and to advance the people’s welfare.
Its west neighbors with Taipao volost of Chiayi county, and its north is adjacent to Mingshong volost of Chiayi county.

 Understanding Chiayi
The present Chiayi city became the seat of Chuluo county (one of the three counties in the island).
The Japanese constructed a 72-kilometer-long railway connecting Chiayi city with the timber land (elevations are 30 meters and 2,200 meters, respectively) in 1912, facilitating an economic boom for the city at the cost of numerous red cypresses ("Hinoki" in Japanese) of millenniums age.

Although news stories in both the China Post and the Taipei Times on the island called the death an accident, there are rumors floating around Chiayi City that the woman was the victim of a love affair gone wrong and that she was killed by a local man with so-called "seedy" connections.
As a result, some expat teachers in the Chiayi area are thinking of leaving the city as soon as possible, fearing the environment, another email message said.

 Mondo Taiwan - 9/21/99 Earthquake and Aftershocks
It looks like Chiayi lost power and received a bit of damage, including a fire at Chungcheng University.
Of course, the media hounds are still sticking their microphones in crying children's faces and asking them if they were scared.
Chiayi experienced another large quake (6.2, if I remember correctly) in July of 1998 which caused a lot of damage.
