  Chicago Movie Review
Chicago is quite worthy of the many accolades lavished upon it.
The movie's tag line, "If you can't be famous, be infamous", sums up the driving force behind the two main characters; Valma Kelly and Roxie Hart, two jailed murderesses determined to get off by using a slick lawyer, the abuse excuse, and the press.
The movie opens in a jazz club where a starry-eyed Roxie (Renee Zellweger) watches headliner Valma (Catherine Zeta Jones) fabulously perform the musical number "All That Jazz" and wishes herself in the spotlight.

CHICAGO has, of course, enough of a rudimentary plot to cement together the dance numbers, which are the film's raison d'être.
It is the 1920s in Chicago and we enter this musical film through a saucy nightclub to see Velma Kelly (Catherine Zeta-Jones) performing a duo act of All that Jazz on her own.
This movie is a fine example of how a musical film can succeed where its pertinent counterpart (as both films focus on a female on death row) Dancer in the Dark failed.

It tells the satirical story of a group of characters living in the windy city, in the roaring twenties: a voluptious vamp that burns in the spotlight, a red-hot mama matron, a greedy, flamboyant lawyer, a wannabe-star chorus girl, and her neglected, suffering, and lovable husband.
However, the man of the hour involved with Chicago is Rob Marshall, who is forever-presesnt behind the camera.

Eszter's Blog Entry: "Movie: Chicago" (01/02/2003)
The movie wasn't a movie musical; it was a movie with some displaced musical numbers disguised as a dreamy, but other-wise sane woman's delusions.
The movie Chicago was a brilliant movie that not only had amazing dance numbers that moved the plot along, but had amazing actresses and actors that perfectly portrayed their characters.
That movie was so good the cinematography, choreograpphy, shit everything was so good it truely was the best musical turned into a movie I have ever seen and my favorite like many others was cell block tango.

On the DVD: Chicago on DVD demonstrates that the producers of Rob Marshall's Oscar-winning film obviously took to heart the lyrics "Give 'em the old Razzle Dazzle", as the widescreen 1.85:1 anamorphic transfer is rich with the lush colours, vibrant tones and sparkling audio that wowed audiences in the cinema.
I have to say that even though "Chicago" is not at the exact same level as these two movies, it is good enough to leave a lasting impression.

Jazz Age Chicago - Movie Theaters
Chicago's first generation of movie theaters, most of which opened in the early 1910s, were mostly small establishments located wherever a vacant storefront could be had.
These so-called movie palaces were distinct from their predecessors in a number of ways.
The city's theater circuits, the most notable of which was Balaban and Katz, expected their movie palaces to draw audiences from across the city, not just the immediate neighborhood.

 Chicago Reader Movie Review
Such an elliptical manner of telling a tale probably couldn't work in a movie, because the camera tends to function independently of offscreen narrators, conveying far more than could correspond to a single voice--which is probably why filmmakers from William Wyler to Luis Buñuel to Jacques Rivette haven't even tried to approximate Bronte's form.
All four movies start off as if they intend to be just as scary as the novel but then wind up simplifying the issues, either by letting a doomed sympathetic character survive (as in Cruel Intentions) or by sentimentalizing the motives or the fates of the more evil characters (as in the other three movies).
It isn't as good as Clueless, but just as that teen movie did a better job with Jane Austen than all the supposedly legit screen adaptations of her novels that flanked it, Cruel Intentions is less presumptuous than the efforts of Vadim, Frears, and Forman, which were all presented as prestigious cultural objects.

When she shoots her philandering husband, she lands on Chicago's famed murderess row, retains Chicago's slickest lawyer, Billy Flynn (Richard Gere), and is the center of the town's most notorious murder case, only increasing her celebrity.
The book Chicago is filled with little known facts, such as for the film's closing number when Roxie and Velma shoot out lights to spell their names over 10,000 light bulbs were used to create the 20 by 30 foot wall of bulbs.
