It was the third straight year the automaker has reported a profit, but gains in Europe, Asia and elsewhere were offset by a loss of $1.6 billion in North American operations.
Plants to be idled through 2008 include the St. Louis, Atlanta and Michigan's Wixom assembly plants and Batavia Transmission in Ohio.
Another two assembly plants to be idled will be determined later this year, the company said.

Their campus will be a unique industrial park for auto part suppliers located just a hubcap throw away from the assembly line of a major automaker.
Instead of using much of their floor space processing components to make assemblies, it marries assemblies to produce a vehicle.
"Suppliers will face the risk of losing employees to the final assembly plant, where wages traditionally are much higher." For instance, an assembler earning $12 an hour at a supplier might be tempted to walk to the assembly plant next door where wages might be $20 an hour.

After an Assembly motion by Second Vice President Timothy L. Bertschy of Peoria to adopt the board's revised version of the proposals, an amendment was offered to restore the task force recommendations that had been red-lined.
Assembly action on the task force recommendations will be referred to the Assembly Rules and Bylaws Committee for implementation during the next meeting.

The Ford plant on Chicago's South Side produces the Ford Five Hundred and Mercury Montego sedans and the Ford Freestyle crossover.
To emphasize Chicago's importance, Codina said updated versions of the Freestyle and Montego, due out for 2008, will be unveiled at the 2007 Chicago Auto Show.

The Chicago Assembly is a collaborative project of the Center for Urban Research and Policy Studies at the University of Chicago’s School of Social Service Administration and the Metropolitan Planning Council.
The objectives of the assembly include focusing attention on policy issues in the Chicago area; educating government officials, community leaders and the public; and increasing the level of public-policy discussion in the metropolitan area.

For the rest, joining Ford in Chicago will mean adding capacity and expenses that will only be made up if they can drive costs out of their supply chains and find efficiencies in assembling larger chunks of the new vehicles.
The Taurus and Sable that are currently being produced at Chicago Assembly are examples of the kind of chunk sourcing suppliers are trying to capitalize on, according to Dug Campbell, president of Tower Automotive of Grand Rapids, Mich. Campbell said that when the vehicles were introduced in 1986, there were 65 structural suppliers.
The City of Chicago and the State of Illinois, however, are chipping in to the tune of $170 million, including more than $50 million in infrastructure improvements to service both the supplier campus and the assembly plant.
