Blitz owner Ted Diethrich was equally displeased with his situation in Chicago, but proposed a rather peculiar idea to his fellow league owners.
New Chicago owner James Hoffman exhausted all of his funds prior to the start 1984 season, and through a contractual agreement with ABC stating that the USFL would field teams in New York (New Jersey), Los Angeles, and Chicago, the league was forced to take ownership of the franchise.
The Blitz would drop their first 5 games of the 1984 season, and attendance that was a disappointing 18,000 in 1983, would fall to a league low of nearly 7,500 on average in 1984.

Ironically, the "old" Blitz, fulfilled expectation as the Wranglers, making it to the championship game, while the "new" Blitz suffered through a dismal season and folded at the end of the year.
