Chicago History -- City Hall   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
The history of Chicago's city government dates back to March 4, 1837 when the town of Chicago, with a population of approximately 4,006, was granted a city charter by the Illinois state legislature.
The Common Council, the predecessor of the present City Council, was comprised of ten aldermen representing the city's six wards.
Rapid development spurned the construction of six different city halls in less than 75 years and the expansion of the number of city wards from 6 to 35 before the turn of the century, expanding even further to the current number of 50 wards.
