When, in 2002, Chicago's biggest hits were assembled together on the two-disc set The Very Best of Chicago: Only the Beginning and the album debuted in the Top 50, giving the band the distinction of having had chart albums in five consecutive decades, the music industry and some music journalists may have been startled.
Chicago marked the confluence of two distinct, but intermingling musical strains in Chicago, IL, in the mid-'60s: an academic approach and one coming from the streets.
Chicago VIII, which marked the promotion of sideman percussionist Laudir de Oliveira as a full-fledged bandmember, appeared in the spring of 1975, spawned the Top Ten hit "Old Days," and became the band's fourth consecutive number one LP.

Chicago IX - Chicago's Greatest Hits - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Chicago IX - Chicago's Greatest Hits is the first greatest hits album by American rock band Chicago and was released in 1975.
Gathering all of Chicago's biggest hits thus far, this set stretches all the way back to their 1969 debut, The Chicago Transit Authority, to 1974's Chicago VII.
Chicago VIII and its hits, having only come out just months earlier, were considered too recent to anthologize, while Chicago III's material was overlooked for inclusion due to its lack of truly big hit singles.

Chicago was formed in Chicago, Illinois in 1967, they go to Los Angeles the next year.
The band was originally called Chicago Transit Authority but the government agency wanted to sue them because of that so they shorten it to Chicago only.
At the beginning they sing with Columbia Records, then in 1969 they released their first album called Chicago Transit Auhtority, this album was double platinum very fast and have four hit singles.

Greatest Hits, Volume II (Chicago album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Greatest Hits, Volume II is the second greatest hits album by American rock band Chicago - their fifteenth overall - and was released in 1981.
Released in November 1981, Greatest Hits, Volume II primarily samples material from Chicago Transit Authority ("Questions 67 and 68") to when the hits stopped coming, 1978's Hot Streets, though it stretches further back to pick up overlooked hits from the era first covered by their original compilation album.
Alike its predecessor, Greatest Hits, Volume II has since been superseded by 2002's The Very Best of: Only the Beginning and is out of print.

I didn't realize that Chicago was formed in 1967, so as I write this, it's their 39th anniversary (more or less).
This is their 30th album, although the last time they released a full new studio album of material was "Chicago 21" back in 1991, so it's been 15 years and 8 albums of either compilations, live, or covers between then and now.

The group had released Chicago VIII earlier in the year (March) and had this album waiting on the back burner for the end of the year (November - which might explain why Old Days was left off it).
While some people might bellyache about this album using only the single version of many of these songs (as well as it maybe not including a personal favorite), I think that this is the tightest collection of Chicago's "hits" available at any time in their long history.
There is no padding here (like many of today's "greatest hits" packages that get foisted upon us too early [or too often] in a group's career) and it is a great representation of the original group (with the late addition of Laudir de Oliveira) before it got diluted (for various reasons) over the years.

 Chicago
Upon release of their first record in early 1969, the band took a new name, "Chicago Transit Authority" (the name would almost immediately be changed to simply "Chicago" after the real CTA objected).
The band's first album, the eponymously titled ''Chicago Transit Authority'', was an audacious debut: a sprawling double album (unheard of for a rookie band) that included jazzy instrumentals, extended jams featuring Latin percussion, and experimental, feedback-laden guitar abstraction.
The group bounced back from this misstep in 1972 with their first single-disc release, ''Chicago V'', a diverse set that reached number one on both the Billboard pop and jazz albums charts and yielded the radio hit "Saturday In the Park".

Background: Chicago is the longest-running and most commercially successful of the hordes of jazz-rock bands with horn sections that sprung up in the late '60s wake of Blood, Sweat and Tears.
After major personnel changes which included the death of founding guitarist Terry Kath due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound Chicago eventually mutated into a more conventional pop group that was able to score hit after hit well into the '80s, usually with romantic ballads.
In 1995, they attempted to merge their unique sound with Big Band music for their album Chicago: Night And Day (Big Band), which consisted of covers of songs originally recorded by Sarah Vaughan, Glenn Miller, and Duke Ellington who was the main inspirationbehind the album.

One of the interesting things about Chicago from 1969-1974 was that their albums always contained a combination of material that sounded great on AM radio alongside very long album rock tracks that didn't have a chance of getting anywhere near the pop charts.
Unfortunately, by the time of Chicago VIII, the band's collective eccentricities took a back seat to Peter Cetera's vocals and the pop ballad formula.
The follow-up to Greatest Hits (Chicago IX) contains material from that era, including "Baby, What a Big Surprise," "Gone Long Gone," and "If You Leave Me Now." However, It does contain a few tracks from the previous era that didn't make onto the first set, including "Dialogue, Pt.
