As libraries in other parts of the country are struggling to preserve funding for hours and staff, Chicago’s library system is in the midst of its largest single-year expansion.
Chicago Public Library officials report that the city will add two new branches and renovate five old ones this year for a total of 80 branches in addition to the Harold Washington Library Center downtown.
The June 24 Chicago Tribune reported that a new West Chicago Avenue branch is scheduled to open on the west side of the city July 16 and a West Pullman branch on the south side in the fall.

CHICAGO (STNG) ― A homeless woman pleaded guilty Friday to setting fire to books in the gay/lesbian and African-American sections of a Chicago Public Library facility in the Lake View neighborhood, for which she was sentenced to 94 days in jail, then released for time served.
Prosecutors allege Graham thought a librarian was rude because the librarian wouldn't allow her to sleep in the library, and the defendant and her boyfriend were not allowed to be on the same computer at the same time.
Library personnel found a small fire on the second floor of the branch at 644 W. Belmont about noon on June 13, and were able to extinguish it themselves, according to library spokeswoman Maggie Killackey.

There was unanimous agreement as to the focus of the symposium; thus, Chicago and the Midwest in the Civil War Era was born.The Chicago Historical Society, with its good name recognition, facility size, excellent location, and prominence on the local scene, was the ideal choice to host the event.
The symposium's success led to heightened awareness by the public of the participating organizations, and it was decided to hold some type of annual recognition of the Civil War in Chicago, although on a lesser scale than the symposium.
