Students who usually take school buses were instructed to go to their neighborhood school instead of the one where they are enrolled.
The last time the school buses did not run was in January 1999, after a New Year's snowstorm that left as much as 22 inches of snow on some parts of the Chicago area.

In 1997, the Chicago Public Schools’ Department of Learning Technologies and the University of Chicago’s Office of Community Affairs formed a partnership seeking to improve the use of computers in the classrooms, labs, and libraries of a small cluster of public schools on Chicago’s South Side.
The CUIP schools include three general public high schools – Hyde Park Academy, Kenwood Academy, and King College Preparatory High School – and seven traditional feeder schools (elementary and middle schools) for each of these high schools.
In 2002 the CUIP team was augmented with the addition of four Chicago Public Schools Instructional Technology Coordinators dedicated to the CUIP effort.
