Dynamic and innovative, the Stock years saw the founding of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, the first training orchestra in the USA affiliated with a major symphony orchestra, in 1919.
During this time Carlo Maria Giulini began to appear in Chicago regularly; he was named principal guest conductor in 1969 and served in that capacity until 1972.

Henry Fogel, the president of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association since 1985, announced Monday that he will retire at the end of the orchestra's 2002–03 season.
Fogel said in his statement that by announcing his departure in advance, he hopes to give the orchestra a plenty of time to find a successor and allow for a smooth transition.
Later, he became orchestra manager of the New York Philharmonic and executive director of the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C. He joined the Chicago Symphony as executive director, but his title was changed to president in 1996.
