It's no secret that several bands in Chicago's avant-pop scene, such as Gastr del Sol, Tortoise, The Sea and Cake, Trans Am and Chicago Underground Duo, have been blurring the borders of jazz, musique concrete, dub and bossa nova.
With the occasional addition of guitarist Parker, the band becomes the Chicago Underground Trio and the tunes hum with minimalist melodies and a shadowy sensibility reminiscent of 1950s West Coast jazz.
Still, it is his own music with Chicago Underground Duo that has a unique balance of dark and light, bold and somber.

After a ton of incredible Chicago Underground albums, in their various forms (Duo, Trio, Quartet, Orchestra), I approach each one with increasing trepidation.
Good portions of this record are not as progressive (read: difficult) as some other Chicago Underground releases; more structured, focused songwriting, not as free.
The Chicago Underground (both specifically this group, but, really, also the larger collective of Chicago post-rock and fakejazz musicians with whom they are associated) has more perfectly accomplished this than any other musician of which I am currently aware.

Chicago Underground's approach to the marriage of jazz and electronics remains sensible--rather than create "electronic jazz" relying heavily on technology, they incorporate the electronics tastefully and subtly, treating all sound equally and being refreshingly un-fascinated with electronics for their own sake.
This is the Chicago Underground release to get if you want something closer to Tortoise or Isotope 217 and further away from Miles Davis and the post-bop that is more typical of the three Chicago Underground Duo releases and the two Trio releases.
