Chichester Psalms - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The text was arranged by Bernstein from the psalms in the original Hebrew.
It was commissioned for the 1965 Southern Cathedrals' Festival at Chichester Cathedral by the cathedral's organist, John Birch, and the Dean, Walter Hussey.
The second movement begins with the psalm of David set in a conventional meter (4/4) with a tranquil melody, sung by the boy soprano (or countertenor), and repeated by the women's voices in the chorus.

Chichester Psalms, although a comparatively short work (less than 20 minutes in duration) is one of Bernstein's most popular pieces and provides a good introduction to his writing.

Chichester Psalms - The Boys And Men Of Wells Cathedral Choir
The world premiere of the Chichester Psalms took place in the Philharmonic Hall, New York in 1965 with the composer conducting, followed by the performance in the Chichester Festival in July that year, conducted by John Birch.
The Chichester Psalms are in three movements and set words from Psalms 108, 100, 23, 2 and Psalms 131 and 133.
The serene second movement is the setting of Psalm 23, and opens with a lyrical solo to be sung by either a boy or a counter-tenor.

Leonard Bernstein: A Ransom Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
In the first, we hear a celebration of joyful worship, the second a picture of the clash between the faithful and the faithless, and the third, after a painful prelude, a statement of proper humility before God, ending with quiet joy.
To begin with, a young boy sings Psalm 23, “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.” The boy soloist is a requirement, Bernstein insists; even though the part is in the women’s alto range, he will not have a woman sing it.
The two groups clash, and eventually the conflict is resolved in favor of the peace and trust of Psalm 23.

He once called Chichester Psalms "the most Bb-majorish tonal piece I've ever written." Even this comment displays Bernstein's discomfort with New Music, for it is simply untrue.
Chichester Psalms is a sophisticated piece that has some quite dissonant counterpoint, bitonality, and oddly modulating tonal passages.
The meatiest pieces, On the Waterfront and Chichester Psalms, come first, and the dances from On the Town, the lightest and most brief at only a little over 10 minutes for all three pieces, seem like an odd appendage--as if they are an encore for a program that is far too brief to deserve one.

I’ll admit being predisposed to like this CD from the outset, featuring as it does not only the music of one of my favourite composers, but being performed by as it were my home team, the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.
The centrepiece of this diverse triptych is Chichester Psalms, written in 1965 as a commission for Chichester Cathedral, to be performed by the combined choirs of Chichester, Salisbury and Winchester cathedrals for a summer music festival.
The texts draw on Psalms 108, 100, 23, 2, 131, 133, and, composed during a major period of the escalation of the Vietnam War, question "Why do the nations rage…" ultimately offering an alternative of dwelling "Together in unity".

Chichester Psalms, set to Leonard Bernstein’s hopeful, occasionally explosive yet, ultimately, serene choral work of 1964, with the words of the Bible sung in Hebrew, put 38 dancers and 63 singers on stage in a semi-circle of risers that left an arena-like space for the dancers to fill.
The orientation of Chichester Psalms around one couple—one man, one woman—rather than around two or three is an uncustomarily decisive choice in his work, and, I think, a good one.
However, the major configuration of the trios who represent the peaceful resolution of violence in Chichester Psalms (man, next to one woman, and a second woman next to the first) is familial rather than erotic, and, on one viewing, it was a fascinating idea, both formally and socially.

In 1965, Leonard Bernstein was commissioned by The Southern Cathedral Festival to compose a piece for the cathedral choirs of Chichester, Winchester, and Salisbury England.
Peace and pastoral harmony are expressed by the strains of the beloved Psalm 23, (The Lord is my shepherd) sung by a solitary boy soprano accompanied only by a harp, evoking the image of the shepherd/poet/king, David.
The male voices enter bringing the humble yet lyrical message of Psalm 131 “Lord, Lord, my heart is not proud, my eyes are not haughty.” The rest of the chorus joins in and the strains swell as mankind again seeks peace and harmony in God.

Chichester Psalms was written at the end of a sabbatical year spent experimenting with various musical idioms with which Bernstein was eventually dissatisfied.
On the whole, this is a worthwhile release, notwithstanding the reservations concerning Chichester Psalms, for its mix of familiar and not-so-familiar music (the Ridout must be a first recording).
A last grumble, though, for no words are included, a pity particularly in the case of Rejoice in the Lamb and Sacred Songs.

 Leonard Bernstein
Of the many of Bernstein's works that illustrate his eclectic genius, Chichester Psalms is a felicitous example in which he used a wide variety of music to help bring a text alive.
The chorale leads into the "allegro molto" in 7/4, a jaunty segment that sets all of Psalm 100: "Make a joyful noise unto the Lord all ye lands." It is jazzy and commercial, in a popular vein, as Bernstein mentioned in his letter to Hussey.
Psalm 100 concludes with the phrase, "And His truth endureth to all generations." This is sprightly music from a composer whose search for faith was trumpeted in a number of his works.

The first movement is joyous, the second movement is a sort of a 'hymn' sung by a male solo high as a boy would sing, and the third movement closes peacefully.
The boy soprano in the 2nd movement(emulating boy David with his harp)sings gorgeously, but one can't understand a word of the Hebrew text of the 23rd Psalm, too bad.If only Bernstein had paid as much attention to the choir as he did to the orchestra, this would be a fabulous recording of a distinctive work.

The Chichester Psalms was Leonard Bernstein's first composition after the Third Symphony, Kaddish (composed for the Boston Symphony Orchestra's seventy-fifth anniversary, though not completed until 1963, eight years after that event).
But where the Kaddish Symphony is a work often at the edge of despair, the Chichester Psalms is serene and affirmative.
The second movement is, for the most part, a serene, lyrical setting of Psalm 23, featuring a boy soloist (or countertenor) accompanied by the harp to represent David, the shepherd-psalmist.

All Together Now - June 27, 2006 - The New York Sun
Bernstein's "Chichester Psalms," commissioned for performance in 1965 by the Cathedral of Chichester in Sussex, England, has benefited from the recent rise in popularity of Bernstein's music, which during his lifetime was held by the arbiters of taste to be insufficiently modernistic.
Bernstein himself, in a cute little verse published in the New York Times, averred that the "Chichester Psalms" were "certain to sicken a John Cager" because of their "tonal and tuneful" idiom.
Bernstein stipulated that "Chichester Psalms" be sung in Hebrew, and I had some difficulty following the transliterated texts in the program.

When a boy soprano sings the 23rd Psalm in Leonard Bernstein's “Chichester Psalms,” it's almost as if the composer was evoking the young David, accompanied by his beloved harp.
The distinctive sound of the “Psalms” – high, pure, ethereal yet ever so human – was heard Thursday as 13-year-old Daniel Myers performed with the San Diego Symphony at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido.
