CHICK CHURCHILL BIOGRAPHY   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Chick began playing piano at the age of six and continued classical studies until the age of fifteen.
At a local gig, Chick met Alvin Lee of The Jaybirds, in whose line-up were bassist, Leo Lyons and drummer Ric Lee.
In 1968, after Chick secured an audition for the band at London's Marquee Club under the name The Bluesyard (the only gig the group ever performed under this name), the quartet became the highly successful rock group, TEN YEARS AFTER.

In 1967, four young musicians from Nottinghamshire, England: Leo Lyons, Ric Lee, Chick Churchill together with Alvin Lee, formed Ten Years After and became one of the biggest names in the most explosive quartet on the world stage.
Their now legendary encore, “I’m Going Home”, performed at The Woodstock Music and Arts Festival in August 1969, was captured on film and exposed their jazz, blues, rock amalgam to a large audience of moviegoers who were blown away by the intensity of the band’s performance, when the Academy Award winning documentary was released.
The new line-up is currently putting the finishing touches to their new album, which will be released in 2004 to coincide with a series of tours and festival appearances around the world.

A good part of their concert consisted of songs that will be released on a new CD in Spring 2004.
The new songs clearly show that Chick Churchill (keyboards), Leo Lyons (bass) and Ric Lee (drums) stick to their roots.
Chick Churchill's keyboard was perhaps throttled a bit down at the beginning of the show [sic!] but towards the end of the concert Chick produced, on several occasions, charming "Hammond" sound that was worth waiting for.

That resulted in an open letter from Ric, Leo and Chick, essentially spouting legal loopholes for their use of name, and threatening potential legal action against web site owners who disagreed.
He understood their desire to use the name recognition of TYA but suggested that maybe they could alter it slightly - New Ten Years After or TYA Revisited or anything that would give them the recognition they desired without possibly misleading fans that the entire band was together. They refused.
We are saddened that Ric, Leo and Chick have taken this action and do believe it may mislead other Alvin Lee fans.

Formed in Nottingham, England, as the Jaybirds in 1965, they abandoned their pedestrian title for a name that slotted in with the booming underground progressive music scene.
By the time of Rock 'N' Roll Music To The World, the band were jaded, even though the album produced some fun rocking moments with the title track and the fan fave "Choo Choo Mama", they rested from touring to work on solo projects.
This resulted in Lee's On The Road To Freedom with gospel singer Mylon LeFevre and a dull album from Chick Churchill, You And Me. When they reconvened, their spark and will had all but gone and remaining albums were poor.

Ten Years After: Alvin Lee (vocals, guitar); Chick Churchill (piano, organ); Leo Lyons (bass); Ric Lee (drums).
It's not a straight blues album, by any means; "If You Should Love Me," for example, is an attractively watery re-write of the Beatles' "Hey Jude," while the opening "Bad Scene" is (unsurprisingly) a cautionary piece of acid rock, heavy on the fuzz guitar and sound efffects.
"The Stomp," however, is another one of leader Alvin Lee's thinly veiled tributes to John Lee Hooker (and a nice showcase for organist Chick Churchill).
