Chick Webb moved to New York around 1925 and from January 1927 led a group at the Savoy Ballroom that later became one of the outstanding bands of the swing period.
Webb's band remained at the Savoy intermittently during the late 1920s and held long residencies there in the 1930s, regularly defeating rival bands in the ballroom's famous cutting contests.
Webb, a diminutive hunchback, was universally admired by drummers for his forceful sense of swing, accurate technique, control of dynamics, and imaginative breaks and fills.

William Henry Webb (Chick Webb) was born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1909.
Chick Webb’s already mythical reputation was given even greater stature when he replaced his longtime vocalist Charles Linton with a then relatively unknown singer by the name of Ella Fitzgerald.
Chick’s funeral procession was said to have been composed of some eighty cars and the church where he was eulogized was said to be unable to hold all the mourners.

The results of the Battle are well documented and debated in favour of the Chick Webb Band, but the deciding statement was that of Gene Krupa who at the end of the evening, stood and bowed to Chick and later stated that he had never been cut by a better man.
The Chick Webb Band recorded many memorable records, unfortunately many of which were badly or rush recorded, as was the case for many negro bands of the thirties.
Chick Webb was one of the most dynamic figures in Jazz.

Chick Webb was hugely admired by drummers such as Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, and Art Blakey for his power, musicianship and impeccable rhythm.
Webb was born with spinal tuberculosis which left him a hunchback and led to his early death.
Webb introduced “Stompin’ at the Savoy” in 1934 and had hits with “If Dreams Come True” and “Blue Lou,” all compositions of his lead alto saxophonist, Edgar Sampson.

This CD consists of 20 instrumentals (other than a Louis Bacon vocal on "Blues in My Heart" and Ward Pinkett's scatting on "Dog Bottom") and allows one to hear how strong a big band Webb's ensemble could be.
Although one regrets that only one of the four recordings by Chick Webb's Little Chicks was included (this small group featured the pioneering jazz flutist Wayman Carver), there are many enjoyable performances on this single disc.

This Drive Archive CD features Chick Webb's Orchestra on two radio broadcasts performed shortly before the drummer passed away.
Ella Fitzgerald takes vocals on six of the dozen selections, including a rollicking "Tain't What You Do," but it is the instrumentals that are of greatest interest, especially "Blue Room," "One O'Clock Jump" and "My Wild Irish Rose" (which has some exciting drum breaks from Webb).
The recording quality of this music, formerly out as an Alamac LP, has been improved, and overall this CD, although not definitive, does give listeners a good idea of how the Chick Webb big band sounded live.
