In the 1970s, the Chicken Ranch was run out of Texas, where prostitution is illegal, and opened in Nevada, where prostitution is legal in most counties.
Outside of Southern Nevada the Chicken Ranch name is perhaps best known from the theatrical production and movie "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas." The brothel was founded in La Grange, Texas, in 1844.
Investors in the Chicken Ranch include Western Best Ltd. and its managing partner, Kenneth Green, said Bob Fisher, a spokesman for the brothel.

Movies are very popular at the Chicken Ranch; the ladies often purchase videotapes during their breaks and bring them to the Chicken Ranch to swap with other ladies.
As a further precaution, the Chicken Ranch requires that ladies returning from their vacation breaks remain at the brothel while their lab work is completed--a day or two, during which the ladies are not allowed to see customers.

The original Chicken Ranch has a history that goes back to the 19th century in Texas (serving soldiers from the Civil War through WWII, cowboys, and eventually the workers drawn in by the Texas oil boom).
During the periods the women work—which can last for months at a time (the minimum stay at the Chicken Ranch is 10 days with girls always spending the first few days unable to work until STD test results arrive from a clinic in Las Vegas)—prostitutes are not allowed beyond the gates that enclose the brothel.
Of course, one has to be careful about stereotyping; there were many working girls at the Chicken Ranch I did not speak with and some girls I did interview chose not to discuss their private life at all, a decision that was respected.

This is carried so far that Parton's only reference to her bosom (indeed, the only moment in the movie when anyone deigns to even notice it) is about her problems "luggin' these around." It's all so matter-of-fact, it's asexual.

I was never convinced that her Mona had a passion for anything; not the Chicken Ranch, not fighting the pissant [I do so like that word] Watch Dog, and certainly not her unrequited love, Ed Earl.
Avery Sommers (Jewel) definitely had the pipes for her part, though "her part", like most of the rest when dealing with the Ranch women, was never really fleshed out.
Not that the movie version of TBLWIT was any big shakes; except for a couple cute songs (and a kickass performance by Charles Durning as the Governor), the movie was rather easy to forget.
