The Gilbertine'srefusal to abandon the Roman Catholic Church resulted in the 1538 surrender of Chicksands to the Crown and the eviction of its occupants.
In 1939 it became the property of the Air Ministry and Royal Airforce, Chicksands was established.
In the latter part of 1940 several bombs were dropped in the area of Chicksands, some falling as close as 100 yards from the Priory, damaging the upstairs walls and the ceilings.

 Chicksands History
Chicksands, on the edge of Shefford, now a Joint Services base for the United Kingdom, has a long history of military involvement stretching back to the Civil War in the 17th Century.
Thomas a Becket, as Archbishop of Canterbury, took refuge in Chicksands in 1164 in the disguise of a canon.
Chicksands has now been acquired by the Ministry of Defence as a Joint Services Base with personnel moving in from late 1996.

The Parish of Campton and Chicksands (which was formed in 1985) is situated approximately 9 miles southeast of the town of Bedford, 13 miles from Junction 13 on the M1 and 7 miles from Junction 10 on the A1.
The village of Campton is built around the 13th century All Saints' Church and stands on a tributary of the river Ivel.
Chicksands adjoins to the northern edge of the village, and consists almost entirely of the wooded Chicksands Priory estate.
