Chico Buarque - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Chico Buarque (full name: Francisco Buarque de Hollanda; born June 19, 1944 in Rio de Janeiro) is a Brazilian singer, composer, dramatist and writer.
"Chico" came from a both intellectual and privileged family background: his father Sérgio Buarque de Hollanda was a well-known historian and sociologist, and the first name of his lexicographer uncle Aurélio Buarque de Hollanda is as strongly associated with Brazilian Portuguese dictionaries as the name Webster is with American ones.
Chico's increasing political activity against the Brazilian military dictatorship resulted in his arrest in 1968, and eventual self-exile to Italy in 1969.

Chico soon became a national sensation, and started to make frequent appearances on television (on Elis Regina/Jair Rodrigues' show) as well as in the popular song festivals.
Chico then took a huge career chance in 1968 writing and scoring a bleak, existential play Roda Viva that was critical of obsessive fan culture.

Of the early stars of MPB (musica popular brasileira), Chico Buarque was one of the first to become a certifiable pop star.
Upon returning to Brazil, Buarque artistic development was greatly enhanced by the friends of his father (the historian Sergio Buarque de Holanda) who were prominent in the early bossa nova movement.
On a more positive note the rift between Buarque, Veloso and Gil was settled upon their return to Brazil in 1972 and Buarque went on to record with both of them in the mid-70s.

Written in intense, subjective, paranoid first-person narrative, the book has Buarque's hero, so disassociated from everything that he is beyond bitterness, wander listlessly through a suburban waste- scape littered with degenerate characters and dubious architechtural achievements.
Buarque's novel is a kind of numbing travelogue through a society stripped of all moral values; his aimless and nameless narrator embarks on a journey without purpose in which every experience further desensitizes him to the robberies, kidnappings, murders and rapes happening around him.
The main character's schizophrenia is a metaphor for the clash between the upper and lower classes; the menace laced through the book is the constant threat of violence, which almost leads to the complete dissolution of the narrator's personality.

Caetano Veloso—who is featured here on a Putumayo CD for the first time (though he has reached superstar status at home and abroad)—was a founding member of the tropicalismo movement, which blended bossa nova, rock, psychedelica, and protest music.
Chico Buarque—who was criticized for not being political enough in the 1970s—sings here: “I leave behind many enemies because I’ve always been honest.” The more extreme the military dictatorship became in Brazil, the more radical Buarque became, which eventually landed him in jail, a credit he ironically shares with Veloso.
