Hamilton's future career as a drummer was well established even before he left school.
Hamilton's groups of the '50s featured several outstanding musicians—among them Collette, Fred Katz, Eric Dolphy, Ralph Pena, Dennis Budimir and Ron Carter—and experimented with unusual instrumental combinations, notably cello and flute.
In the mid-'60s Hamilton was invited to write and perform advertising jingles; this proved so successful that he formed a production company, the running of which kept him from active participation in jazz for several years.

Only the first of the Chico Hamilton Quintet's albums has been imported here (from Japan, where I've heard rumors the second album was also released on CD), although a number of his post-Pacific Jazz albums (including at least two with Eric Dolphy) are available.
Hamilton was the drummer -- ordinarily an odd choice to lead such a group, but Hamilton was probably the most musical drummer in jazz, equal to Shelly Manne in subtlety and finesse, but tempered by his years with Lena Horne into a more musically sensitive attitude.
When Hamilton hired Charles Loyd to replace Dolphy, he also abandoned the original Quintet format and music.

Foreststorn "Chico" Hamilton began his drum journey as a teenager in Los Angeles, where he played in a band with schoolmates Charles Mingus, Illinois Jacquet, Ernie Royal, Dexter Gordon, Buddy Collette and Jack Kelso.
Hamilton went on to become the house drummer at Billy Berg's, the popular Los Angeles nightspot where every major jazz artist from New York eventually came through, including Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker and Billie Holiday (with whom he later would record).

In 1987, Hamilton was on the originating faculty at Parsons New School of Jazz in New York.

Drummer Chico Hamilton early on was said to exemplify West Coast Jazz, which quickly became a tired cliché used as a slam to signify something much less vibrant than what was being cooked up in New York City in the '50s and '60s.
According to Chico it was actually a Basin Street club gig in New York that paired his band with Max Roach's group, which led to the publicity stunt billing of East Coast vs. West Coast jazz.
As a bandleader Chico's sensitive and musical traps approach was obviously required by the settings he chose.

For this interesting LP, drummer Chico Hamilton is mostly heard with an octet of Los Angeles musicians.
The group, comprised of trumpet/trombone/tenor man Harold Land, French horn/flute (or piccolo) player and guitarist Gabor Szabo, bassist Albert Stinson, and the drummer/leader, performs originals by Hamilton and Szabo, plus "What's New." The concise performances (which are often tightly arranged) are full of subtleties and fine playing, particularly from the guitarist.
The title cut was recorded two months later and is the last recording by Chico Hamilton with his star sideman Charles Lloyd, who is heard on flute.

Hamilton & co. explore the world of grooves from blues, latin, swing, funk and beyond.
The blues are saluted with a nice Hamilton vocal on the classic “I’m Gonna Move To The Outskirts Of Town” that also features the decidedly un-bluesy harmonica of John Popper of the popular group Blues Traveler.
The swinging “Around The Corner,” another Hamilton original, gives the drummer a chance to shine with a nice hi-hat solo which segues into a spacey interlude featuring bassist Paul Ramsey before returning to the swinging groove.

Chico & his Euphoria genuinely enjoyed performing for the crowd ' these weren't Artists from some Mount Olympus, acting like they were doing the audience a favor just by Being There.

As I write this, for some reason, much of drummer Chico Hamilton's output as a leader is either out of print, or only available as very expensive import discs.
Chico Hamilton has pretty much played it all in the jazz field.
I love Hamilton's sense of adventure, STILL trying to do something different after all these years (this was recorded in 1993).
