Leonard Marx, known as Chico, (March 22, 1887 – October 11, 1961) was one of the Marx Brothers.
Stereotyped ethnic characters were common with Vaudeville comedians, and all the Marx brothers sometimes performed "dialect characters" early in their careers, but Chico was the only one to continue this.
Chico Marx had a lifelong gambling habit, which usually kept him short of funds, and which compelled him to continue in show business long after his brothers had retired in comfort from their Hollywood income.

Born in New York City, the Marx Brothers were the sons of Jewish immigrants from different parts of Germany.
Under Chico's management and with Groucho's creative direction, the brothers' vaudeville act had become successful enough to make them stars on Broadway, first with a musical revue, "I'll Say She Is" (1924-1925), followed by two musical comedies, "The Cocoanuts" (1925-1926) and "Animal Crackers" (1928-1929).
The Marx Brothers' segment was a reworking of a scene from their Broadway play I'll Say She Is, a parody of Napoleon that Groucho considered among the Brothers' funniest routines.

This is their low point and if you gave me the choice of wiping "The Big Store" from human memory along with the small measure of redemption the Marx Brothers achieved in 1946 when they filmed "A Night in Casablanca," then I think I would be willing to delete both movies.
I know that the original formula for a Marx Brothers show, whether on stage or in the movies, was to combine comedy with music and romance.

It has all of the classic Marx Brothers situations; a smart alec Groucho chasing after a rich Margaret Dumont, Chico who never quite gets things correctly understood, Harpo's pantomime routines, Chico on the piano and Harpo on the harp.
Comment: This was the first Marx brothers movie I had seen, and coincidentally their first release, and it cracked me up.
Harpo is in top form here, the scene near the end at the party is hilarious, especially when Harpo walks into the party wearing a hat with the strap around his nose and the expression on his face is priceless.

Groucho, Chico and Lucy are bound by the dialog in the script, and therefore simply can't be as funny as we know they're capable of being.
So yeah, there was no Harpo on the harp, or Chico on the piano, or any moments of utter Marx madness which keeps me in stitches (unless you count Harpo chasing the turkey around the room, and breaking every single breakable thing there in his attempts).
If you are a Marx Brothers fan you may want to add this to your collection...otherwise if you are just looking for a real entertaining Marx Brothers film try "Duck Soup" or "A Day At The Races" and let this one rest.
