Chicxulub crater, Mexico and the Cretaceous - Tertiary boundary
Chicxulub is a peak-ring crater with a poorly known topographic ring occurring at 40 to 45 km radius from the crater's center.
The crater was named Chicxulub because its center lies near the coastal town of Puerto Chicxulub (Image courtesy Geological Survey of Canada).
At this locality the ejecta layer from the Chicxulub crater is ~2 cm thick and at some places preserves the shapes of the individual tektites that compose the layer.

Athena Review 2,1: Chicxulub crater in Yucatán
Geologists and archaeologists searching in 1987 for limestone sinkholes (cenotes) used as water sources at ancient Mayan sites in northern Yucatán discovered the perimeter of the 200 km-wide Chicxulub impact crater that, some 65 million years ago, may have played a major role in the extinction of the dinosaurs.
Besides the value of the Chicxulub impact to explain catastrophic events causing the end of the dinosaur era on earth, of equal importance is comparative data useful for planetary geology.
This crater, variously estimated at 180-300 km in diameter, is one of the largest impact structures known on Earth, or other planets in the solar system such as Venus, where many craters have been studied.

Using sophisticated imaging technology, NASA and the U.S. National Imagery and Mapping Agency (NIMA) have produced the first topographic indication of Chicxulub, the impact crater on Mexico's Yucat‡n Peninsula.
The Chicxulub data show a subtle, yet unmistakable, topographic indication of the impact crater's outer boundary: a semicircular trough 10 to 15 feet (3 to 5 meters) deep and 3 miles (5 kilometers) wide.
Scientists believe the impact, centered off Yucat‡n's coast in the Caribbean, disturbed the subsurface rocks, making them unstable.
