In any case of usage within these two states the chief medical officer will be a qualified medical doctor whose duties will not include treatment but typically only advise such as public health matters.
In England, the CMO is a member of the board of the National Health Service (NHS), a civil servant in the Department of Health, and head of the medical civil service.

Fiona Wood, a Perth plastic surgeon who is the director of the Royal Perth Hospital's burns unit and chief medical officer of a cell culture business, was honored by Australian Prime Minister John Howard in Canberra on Tuesday night, ahead of the Australia Day national holiday on Wednesday.
Wood, who migrated to Australia from the United Kingdom in 1987, led a team of specialists who treated many of the burns victims evacuated to Australia after the Bali nightclub blasts in October 2002.
She and other surgeons used a spray-on skin that is still under development.

General Vandenberg retired from active duty as a result of illness on June 30, 1953, and died nine months later at Walter Reed Army Medical center from prostate cancer at the age of 55 and was buried in Section 30 of Arlington National Cemetery.
Hoyt Sanford Vandenberg (January 24, 1899–April 2, 1954) was an U.S. Air Force officer and director of the Central Intelligence Agency.
In June 1943, General Vandenberg was assigned to the United Kingdom and assisted in the organization of the Air Forces in North Africa.
