The capital, formerly at Nongoma, was moved in 1980 to Ulundi.
It was led by Chief Mangosuthu Buthelezi of the Zulu tribe and head of the Inkatha Freedom Party until its abolition in 1994.

Chief Molefe is the hereditary leader of a Sotho-speaking group allowed to settle in Natal by the British, in return for its loyalty at the time of the defeat of the Zulu kingdom in 1879.

 Rural Kwazulu Natal Fears Violence Despite Security Operation
As police and soldiers mount the biggest security operation since the 1994 election, the war-weary residents of KwaZulu-Natal's rural flashpoints are holding their breaths.
Provincial SA Police Service commissioner Chris Serfontein and SA National Defence Force commander Major-general Chris le Roux told a news conference in Durban earlier this week the pre-election phase of their security operation had stabilised most of the flashpoints in the province ahead of the June 2 poll.
But some residents in potential trouble spots in Richmond and other rural areas have seen no signs of the increased security and say the government ministers in charge of the police and army should have visited these flashpoints to familiarise themselves with the terrain.

I have dedicated my entire life to the cause of development and when I was the Chief Minister of the erstwhile KwaZulu Government I began creating these industrial parks.
I participated in the 1973 strikes and even sent my Minister of Interior, Mr Barney Dladla, to Durban to support the workers during those strikes which were very successful in addressing the issue of a living wage for workers.
This action caused the then Minister of Labour, Mr Marais Viljoen, who was later appointed State President, to attack me for what he called my illegitimate interference in the affairs of industrial workers, because he argued that Durban was outside the territory of the KwaZulu Territorial Authority over which I then presided.
