Sikkim was an independent state ruled by the Namgyal monarchy until 1975, when a referendum was held and the population voted to join India as its twenty-second state.
Sikkim has four districts, each overseen by a Central Government appointee, the district collector, who is in-charge of the administration of the civilian areas of the districts.
The avifauna of Sikkim is comprised of the Impeyan pheasant, the crimson horned pheasant, the snow partridge, the snow cock, the lammergeyer and griffon vultures, as well as golden eagles, quail, plovers, woodcock, sandpipers, pigeons, Old World flycatchers, babblers and robins.

A Sikkim Armed Police constable Dilli Ram Sharma’s wife Indira Sharma (29) was allegedly raped, beaten to death and her body chopped into pieces on January 4 by Lance Naik R.N. Garai in Burtuk, five km from Gangtok city.
In his letter to the Defence Minister and the PM, a copy of which is with the Express, Chamling said: ‘‘The people of my state are both anguished and agitated.
Sikkim Resident Commissioner S.C. Gupta said the Defence Minister has said he would, in addition to police investigations, initiate a court martial against the accused.

 Nar Bahadur Bhandari Chief Minister of Sikkim
Born on October 5, 1940 at Malbasey Village, Soreng Sub-Division, West Sikkim, Mr.Nar Bahadur Bhandari is the son of late Balaram Bhandari and Late Chandramaya Bhandari.
Under his leadership, the Sikkim Janata Parishad took part in the general elections in 1979 and won 16 seats and with the support of Independent Sangha MLA, Rev. Lachen Gomchen Rimpoche formed his first Government.
His Sikkim Sangram Parishad Party returned to power once again in 1989 with a clean sweep until he lost a vote of confidence in May 1994 in the Sikkim Legislative Assembly and resigned from the Government.

NEW DELHI: Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling is hopeful that the first India-China bus service between Gangtok and Lhasa could begin in the future, after the Nathu La pass is formally opened for trade on July 6.
Sikkim was expecting an initial 5,000 jobs from the opening of the trade.
A "trade pass" would be required by traders to ply their wares between Serethang (India) and Renqinggang (China), a distance of 7-8 km from Nathu La. This trade would run four months a year — from June 1 to September 30.

Four houses were destroyed in a fresh incidence of landslide in the worst-affected West Sikkim district of Sikkim.
The state government has formally asked the Centre to send a team to inspect and assess the damage wrecked by the landslides, a senior official in the relief commissioner's office in the capital Gangtok said.
