Chifeng (Chinese 赤峰, Pinyin Chìfēng, Wade-Giles Ch'ih-feng; Lit.: red peak) is a prefecture-level city in the southeast part of Inner Mongolia, near the borders of Chaoyang prefecture in Liaoning province and Chengde prefecture in Hebei.
It was formerly the seat of the Roman Catholic diocese of Chifeng.

At Chifeng prison, as in the rest of the PRC penal system, political prisoners are not held separately from prisoners convicted for common criminal offenses.
Inmates at Chifeng Prison are mainly engaged in producing bricks and carpets of the type for which Mongolia has become renowned.
HRIC’s source said that the most feared punishment for an inmate at Chifeng is to be sent to the “disciplinary cell,” or yaxiaohao, a cell isolated from the rest of the prison where the guards are allowed to impose abuses that are technically forbidden by prison regulations.

 Chifeng area
Given that most of the unfortified sites found within the Chifeng area were close to or within the confines of these fortified sites and were smaller in comparison, Gideon Shelach postulates the possibility of a settlement hierarchy within this sector of the Lower Xiajiadian (1994).
Although an extensive analysis of Chifeng Area sites has yet to be completed, surveys and excavations that have been done show that most dwellings are small, round, and semi-subterranean (floor base dug partially into the ground).
A striking feature of early Lower Xiajiadian culture in the Chifeng Area is the extensive use of stone to line the walls of the semi-subterranean houses.

Both systems are within a very short distance of Chifeng, a city which is often passed through by enthusiasts on their way to and/or from the Ji-Tong railway.

Although it could provide an 'avoiding route' around Chifeng it is not used as such by CNR and all traffic on the line is steam-hauled by a fleet of JS class engines with five or more engines being required each day.
