For ecclesiastical purposes the ancient parish was divided by the formation of the district of Buckhurst Hill in 1838 and that of Chigwell Row in 1860.
Chigwell was formerly in the forest of Essex and two small patches of woodland still exist within the area of the ancient parish.
In 1953 the population of Chigwell Ward was estimated at 14,000 and that of Buckhurst Hill Ward at 12,000.

It was a private, fee-paying school and was considered one of the top junior schools in the area.
If anyone has a school photo from this period, please contact me. Ironically, my brothers have 3 school photos dated 1959, 1960 and 1961, from which I'll be taking the photos of the teachers for use here.

As far as I know the School never ever had a fives-playing master - Hughes and Campbell (Old Edwardians) came and played an exhibition match in, I think, 1958, taught one or two of the older smokers and card players the rules, and that was that.
Few people played in my time at the school, enough to make up the numbers for a House competition, and I don't think there was much activity at all from the start of the 70s.
