 The Manchus
In the year 1661 Shun Chih, the first actual Emperor of the Ch`ing dynasty, "became a guest on high." He does not rank as one of China's great monarchs, but his kindly character as a man, and his magnanimity as a ruler, were extolled by his contemporaries.
By the end of Shun Chih's reign, the Manchus, once a petty tribe of hardy bowmen, far beyond the outskirts of the empire, were in undoubted possession of all China, of Manchuria, of Korea, of most of Mongolia, and even of the island of Formosa.
The young Empress was about to become a mother; and had she borne a son, her position as mother of the baby Emperor would have been of paramount importance, while the grandmother, the older Empress Dowager, would have been relegated to a subordinate status.

In order to prevent this and to keep Tung Chih busy so that she could continue to rule in his name, she supposedly encouraged her son to keep concubines.

Chapter 1: China and the Manchus
Turning now to China, the famous House of Sung, the early years of which were so full of promise of national prosperity, and which is deservedly associated with one of the two most brilliant periods in Chinese literature, was founded in 960.
The Nu-chen and Korean armies, acting in concert, inflicted a severe defeat on the Kitans, and from this victory may be dated the beginning of the Nu- chen power.
China, no doubt, would have been glad to get rid of both these troublesome neighbours, especially the Kitans, who were gradually filching territory from the empire, and driving the Chinese out of the southern portion of the province of Chihli.

Chinese scholars consider that the Yueh Chih tribe moved along the Yellow River and afterwards continued to migrate westwards to the Yili River valley (Lu Enguo, 2002).
In my opinion it is possible that the name Ta Yueh Chih in the Chinese chronicles (for the early history of Kushans) was unknown and subsequently had no equivalent in the ancient western sources.
Although the Chinese continued to call the tribes of Yueh chih by the name ‘Yueh chih’ even after their migration, Greek and Latin authors gave them different names.
