The eastern part of the Yukon plateau, bounded on the north and east by the Ogilvie and the Selwyn mountains, respectively, and on the south by the Liard and Stikine plateaus, is somewhat higher and colder than the Section to the west.
To the south and west it is bounded by highland moss barrens, on the east by the poorer forests of the Avalon peninsula, and on the north by a narrow maritime strip \ differentiated by a contrasting prominence of white spruce.
The forests of the relatively low-lying land on the northern half of the Nechako plateau are transitional in composition between the montane and the subalpine forests.

Basalt interpreted to be mainly of mid- to late Miocene age underlies isolated centres in various parts of the Euchiniko map area.
The basalt is mostly flat lying and consists of poorly exposed flows and eruptive centres.
In the Jerryboy Hills the basalt is commonly a breccia with mainly pebble to cobble size clasts in a rusty weathering recessive matrix.

A zone of small-volume basaltic lava flow eruptions about 150 km inland from and running parallel to the Garibaldi volcanic belt.
Chilcotin eruptions happened mainly 6-10 million years ago and 2-3 million years ago in the early stages of Garibaldi belt activity.
The volcano maps show only the Chilcotin eruptions that are Pliocene and younger (younger than 5.3 million years).

In southwestern British Columbia, the Pemberton and Garibaldi volcanic belts and the Chilcotin Group plateau basalt define an arc-backarc pair related to subduction of the Juan de Fuca and Explorer plates under the continental margin.
The central segment of the Garibaldi Belt (Souther, 1980) is defined by a group of eight volcanoes on the height of land east of Squamish River, and by remnants of basaltic flows preserved in the adjacent Squamish valley.
The volcano is dominated by porphyritic andesite to rhyodacite lava and pyroclastic breccias, although several Quaternary basalt flows and breccias occur on the periphery.

Diabasic and basaltic rocks are generally dark grey to fl, and weather rusty brown to dark grey.
Distinctively fresh vesicular basalt (15-20 percent small vesicles, 1-5 mm in diameter) occurs 1 km to the south of the neck as common subcrop along logging roads.
Basaltic and diabasic centres related to eruption of Chilcotin Group basalt flows are widespread throughout the Nechako River map area.

It is a moderately dissected, wide, uplifted plateau dominated by landslide and fluvial erosion processes in the western portion.
The western area is composed of Eocene, Miocene, and Oligocene tuffs, siltstones, sandstones with basalts, andesites, and rhyolites.
Valley bottoms are covered by a parkland of scattered ponderosa pine in a matrix of bluebunch wheat grass and sagebrush and at lowest elevations by sagebrush, bluebunch wheat grass, blue grass and June-grass.

ABSTRACT: Neogene Chilcotin basalts in south-central British Columbia: geology, ages, and geomorphic history   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
K - Ar whole-rock dates demonstrate that several ages of basalt are represented, from Early Miocene (or even Late Oligocene?) to Early Pleistocene, with particularly abundant eruptions about 14-16, 9-6, and 1-3 Ma ago.
In places the low-relief surfaces had been incised to depths of 100-200 m and the valleys backfilled with mid or late Cenozoic sediments prior to burial by the basalts.
The low-relief surfaces throughout the area are believed to have been developed close to a common base level, and regional differences in their present elevation are thus largely a product of post-basalt deformation.
