Topic: Child psychopathology

Psychopathology - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Most notably, psychiatrists and clinical psychologists are particularly interested in this area and may either be involved in clinical treatment of mental illness, or research into the origin, development and manifestations of such states, or often, both.
The term psychopathology may also be used to denote behaviours or experiences which are indicative of mental illness, even if they do not constitute a formal diagnosis.
It bills itself as the 'International journal of experimental psychopathology, phenomenology and psychiatric diagnosis' and aims to 'elucidate the complex interrelationships of biology, subjective experience, behavior and therapies'.

NIH Guide: THE IMPACT OF CHILD PSYCHOPATHOLOGY AND CHILDHOOD INTERVENTIONS ON SUBSEQUENT DRUG ABUSE
Characteristics of the family and the family environment that may be associated with the child's psychopathology and SUD include genetic mechanisms, parental SUD, and parental psychopathology, and the interaction of these.
Research is needed to determine the causal, mediating, and moderating nature of relationships between family factors, child psychopathology, and substance use disorders.
Both categorical and dimensional approaches to psychopathology are encouraged; while a particular disorder may constitute a clear risk factor (categorical approach), sometimes it is the severity of impairment associated with disorder, rather than simple presence of a disorder, that is associated with increased risk for SUD (dimensional approach).

 Early Externalizing Behavior Problems
In the child psychopathology area, the work of Richman, Stevenson, and Graham (1982) revealed that as many as 60% of three_year_olds with extreme scores on measures of externalizing behavior would continue to have difficulties in middle childhood.
Moreover, it is widely recognized that the dual focus on temperamental or within child characteristics and features of the family context imply transactional processes and implicate environmental and genetic influences, and gene_environment interactions.
Child behavior in infancy and toddlerhood may be marked by high levels of negative and angry affect that is poorly regulated and may be manifest in symptoms such as impulsivity, hyperactivity, aggression, and noncompliance.

CRISP - Computer Retrieval of Information on Scientific Projects, Abstract Display
Child maltreatment has been identified as a profound risk factor for compromised normal development and psychopathology.
To understand the etiology, process, and sequelae of child abuse and neglect and to inform prevention and intervention efforts, it is crucial to study mechanisms and processes that eventuate in adaptive versus maladaptive outcome.
Research on child maltreatment and psychopathology will particularly benefit from applying advanced methodology for longitudinal analyses to study dynamic processes in the development of psychopathology among maltreated children.

 Abnormal Psychology
The study of child psychopathology is complicated by a host of factors that influence problem definition, course, and outcome, as well as treatment (Campbell, 1983).
At this stage of development, although still largely egocentric, the child's cognitive abilities are increasing: s/he is able to use and understand language to a much greater degree, symbolic thought increases, s/he is able to follow rules to a certain extent...all of which suggests the child's ability to "think about what they are doing".
For example: the child who withdraws from social contact will not be as salient as the child who disrupts class, and so may not be identified as needing help.

Gray's reinforcement sensitivity model and child psychopathology: laboratory and questionnaire assessment of the BAS and BIS
Thus, Gray's model is of great interest to the field of developmental psychopathology because it offers an opportunity to integrate multiple levels of influence such as biologically based individual differences with contextual risk and protective factors into a theoretical framework for studying pathways to childhood psychopathology.
Quay (1988) was among the earliest proponents of applying Gray's model to the study of child psychopathology, and several researchers have followed his lead to develop etiological theories of child behavior problems that incorporate the BAS and BIS (e.g., Beauchaine, 2001; Frick, 1998).
