  ChildLine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It was formed in 1986, largely at the instigation of the television presenter Esther Rantzen, who is still chair of the board of trustees of ChildLine.
The primary role of ChildLine is to provide a 24-hour telephone helpline to comfort and advise children suffering because of bullying, child abuse, problems at school or other concerns.
In 2004 it was controversially announced that the organisation's Nottingham base, which had been the second to open after the London headquarters, was to be closed as a cost-cutting measure.

Children call ChildLine about a wide range of problems but the most common problem is abuse, both sexual and physical.
Since it was launched, ChildLine has saved children’s lives, broken paedophile rings, found refuges for children in danger on the streets, and given hope to thousands of children who believed no-one else cared for them.
But the sad truth is that the enormous demand for ChildLine’s service means that hundreds more children each day are unable to get through and hear a message asking them to call again later.
