His course was rendered easier by the fact that his own sons had died; consequently, having an inheritance at his disposal, he was able to offer it to whichever of his nephews he wished.
He adopted him as his son, and recognized him as his heir at the treaty of Andelot (587); he also helped him to crush the great lords, especially Ursion and Berthefried, who were conquered in la Woevre.
Gregory of Tours is very indulgent to Guntram, who showed himself on occasions generous towards the church; he almost always calls him "good king Guntram," and in his writings are to be found such phrases as "good king Guntram took as his servant a concubine Veneranda" (iv.

 Clovis
Unlike that adopted in other barbarian kingdoms founded upon the ruins of the Roman Empire, this regime established absolute equality between the Gallo-Roman natives and their Germanic conquerors all sharing the same privileges.
Theodoric, the eldest, was the issue of union prior to that contracted with Clotilda, who was, however, the mother of the three others, Clodomir, Childebert, and Clotaire.
They divided their father's kingdom among themselves, following the barbarian principle that sought promotion of personal rather than national interests, and looked upon royalty as the personal prerogative of the sons of kings.

 Clovis I Summary
After the battle Clovis adopted Christianity and by so doing won the support of the Gallo-Roman bishops who controlled a significant portion of the wealth of Gaul and were exceedingly influential with the population.
Clovis I died in 511 and is interred in Saint Denis Basilica, Paris, France, whereas his father had been buried with the older Merovingian kings in Tournai.
This created the new political units of the Kingdoms of Reims, Orléans, Paris and Soissons and inaugurated a period of disunity which was to last, with brief interruptions, until the end (751) of his Merovingian dynasty.

In 577, Clotaire and Clodomir, his two surviving children, died of dysentery and he adopted as his son and heir, Childebert II, his nephew, Sigebert's son, whose kingdom he had saved two years prior.

 Literacy - Law and Administration
The Merovingian kings of Francia, who were Germanic barbarian invaders and precursors to Charlemagne's Holy Roman Empire, adopted something of the Roman literate mode in that they had a royal chancery which produced diplomas in their own distinctive Merovingian chancery script.
This had some characteristics in common with the curialis of the papacy, as well as the fact that up until the 7th century it was written on papyrus.
By the time of Pippin, the father of Charlemagne, kings had become either less capable of writing or more inclined to grand symbolic behaviour as they only added a ceremonial stroke or two to the cross or monogram of the king.

 Childebert III Adoptivus -
Childebert is usually reckoned to be the natural son of Grimoald I, the mayor of the palace of King Sigibert III of Austriasia (the region of present-day France around Metz), who adopted him, although another version of the story has the situation reversed.
When Sigibert died in 657, Grimoald had the rightful heir, Dagobert, sent to Ireland "on pilgrimage," while he installed the boy Childebert as his puppet on the throne.
This caused opposition among the nobles, however, which resulted in 662 in Grimoald's murder and Childebert's overthrow and probably his death as well.

We are not to regard the ordinance of Childebert and Clothaire, or this of Edgar, as the institution of an entirely new organization, and as creating the district as well as the police system from which it took its name.
It would be as difficult to prove any historical connexion between the decrees of 595 and the ordinance of Edgar, as it would to trace either directly to the 'centeni' of the Germania.
The law of Childebert and Clothaire recognizes the existence of the territorial hundred even whilst instituting a new measure of police.

Childebert III (639-662) — known as The Adopted — was the first Carolingian to rule Austrasia, from 656 to 662 : taking advantage of his position as mayor of the palace of Austrasia, this Pippinid (Carolingian) usurped the throne of Austrasia.
Still, in 687 Austrasia defeated Neustria and since then there had just been one single ‘maire du palais’ for both Neustria and Austrasia and it was the Carolingian or Pippinid dynasty which took power of the ‘mairie du palais’.
The Merovingian Frankish royal dynasties were considered sacred and until Pépin le Bref, a Carolingian or Pippinid, took the throne in 752 (to the exception of Childebert III The Adopted, a Carolingian usurper).
