The chief development in Chilean foreign relations during this period of Conservative dominance was a series of conflicts with neighbouring countries—first with Bolivia and Peru in 1836, and then with Argentina, beginning in 1843.
Chilean interests subsequently began the exploitation of the immensely valuable nitrate deposits in the Atacama Desert.
The state of emergency was finally lifted in August 1988, and in October Chileans were permitted to hold a plebiscite on whether Pinochet’s term, due to expire in March 1989, should be extended to 1997.

Chilean presidents were allowed a maximum term of six years, which may explain Allende's haste to restructure the economy.
The Chilean Congress instead chose Allende as President, on the condition that he would sign a "Statute of Constitutional Guarantees" affirming that he would respect and obey the Chilean Constitution, and that his socialist reforms would not undermine any element of it.
The renowned neo-Nazi intellectual and former Chilean diplomat Miguel Serrano (who was the mentor to many in the fascist “Patria y Libertad” movement, which was instrumental in overseeing the CIA’s backed programme of destabilization in Chile) often spoke about Allende’s “Jewishness” or his “Judeo-Bolshevik” agenda.

An important part of Viaux's plan was to kidnap Chilean Army Chief of Staff General René Schneider, who, as a constitutionalist, was opposed to the idea of a coup from a historically apolitical military.
On September 10, 2001, a suit was filed by the family of constitutionalist General René Schneider, once head of the Chilean general staff, accusing former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger of arranging Schneider's 1970 murder because he would have opposed a military coup [24].
Over the years, both the perpetrators of the coup themselves and their supporters have justified the coup by arguing that it was essential for preserving democracy and prosperity in Chile.

And, third, I find little evidence of the elegance that typifies Chilean wines in general and I strongly dispute that this is something which characterises Rothschild wines in general.
This is indeed a part of the market which only a few Chilean wine producers compete in but the good news has been that when they have, as with, say, Errazuriz, the products still represent great value for money for they out point and out fruit wines costing a great deal more.
I suppose they are targeted at consumers who do not care to think too deeply about the wines they purchase and have mindsets dominated by a desire to be reassured before they part with their money in an area they perhaps find bewilderingly and richly over-stocked with choices.

Political lessons of the Chilean coup: Statement issued by the Fourth International on September 18, 1973
The defeat of the Chilean working class was one of the most tragic and bloody of a series of defeats that occurred between 1965 and 1975, beginning with the coup that brought the Suharto dictatorship to power in Indonesia.
The chief ideological weapon of the Chilean Stalinists in preparing the conditions for the coup was the Menshevik theory of a two-stage revolution and the bankrupt concept of a "peaceful parliamentary road to socialism" through Popular Fronts--both of which disarmed the working class and prevented its mobilization at the crucial moment.
No defense of the Chilean working class is possible without an unveiling of the lies, half-truths and outright distortions resorted to by the British and European Stalinists to cover up the causes of the defeat and play down the magnitude of its consequences.
