The Chilia branch with many ramifications and islets is the youngest and the longest arm more vigouros than the others because it is transporting the most important quantity of water and alluvial deposits.
The specific character of the branch is entailed by the two diffluences, the first is between Pardina (the 76 Km) and Chilia Veche (the 46 Km), and the second one between the 38 Km and Periprava (the 22 Km).
The branch have been preferred for maritime navigation on the basis of Danubian European Commission's studies (1856), situation which favourized the correction of meandres and the deepening of the river bed during 1857 - 1902 (the dredging starting with 1857, and cutting the curls of the meanders in 1868).

The oldest branch of the Danube Delta, the Sfântu Gheorghe Branch, used to flow to the sea through a South passage of the Letea-Caraorman sand bank, which developed the first delta of the Danube River: Sfântu Gheorghe I Delta.
Sulina Delta was gradually deteriorated, and the Saraturile sand-bank has formed, of a different substance than the Letea-Caraorman one; also, Chilia Branch, in the north, and Sfântu Gheorghe Branch, in the South, have built their own deltas: Chilia Delta and Sfântu Gheorghe II Delta.
Because of the fact that Chilia Branch runs most of the total amount of water, because of a strong subsidence in the North of the Delta, the secondary Chilia delta sector forwards very fast into the Black Sea, with an average of 80 meters/year, comparing to Sfântu Gheorghe II Delta, which forwards much slower.

This branch was called Sulina and had a quick advance towards the sea, due somehow to the clogging of the Sf.
The clogging of the Sulina branch forces the water of the Danube to search for a new flow to the Black Sea, and in this way the initial sand belt has been gone through again in the north side 2 000 years ago where Periprava is today, forming Chilia branch.
The alluvial deposits of the Chilia branch enhanced the advance of the Delta towards the north.

The condition of the water quality on the Danube river in 2000 has been assessed by processing the information acquired from 12 category I control sections located as follows: 10 on the Danube river, 1 on Chilia branch and 1 on Sulina branch.
This was mainly due to the intensive river navigation, maritime transit, and Romanian and Ukrainean harbour activities.
The existing data show that navigation is still a source of pollution for the aquatic environment within the R.B.D.D. territory, both due to high tonnage ships (sailing on Sulina branch) and low capacity vessels (used for fishing, transport, tourism, etc).

In the curved section of the river, upstream of the location of the Danube River splitting in the delta’s branches, the water current is outwardly pushing the shad larvae to the right shore, the Romanian, respectively.
Therefore, Tulcea branch (Romanian) takes over 60-80 % from the total of Danubian larvae, even its water flow is smaller (40 %) than Chilia branch (the border of Romania and Ukraine).
Consequently, the topography and hydrology of the river at the splitting point of the branceh which form the delta decide on the distribution of larvae, and later, when the shads are homing on the same way for spawning the sharing catch between Romania and Ukraine.

 Protection of European deltas
As the experience of the Sulina branch (which was made navigable for large sea ships between 1857 and 1902) has shown, navigation strongly affects the ecosystem in the immediate vicinity of a canal in an irreversible manner, due to the anthropic factors: stone dykes, navigation with its components (noise, accidental pollution, human settlements development etc.).
The total yearly quantity to be dredged in the Romanian part of the Delta is therefore estimated at around 2.1 million m3 of sediments, of which the major part has to be dredged on the Sulina branch[11].
Due to the reinforcement of the banks, the lateral water flow from the branch to the neighbouring area would diminish or be interrupted which will interrupt the important ways for short migratory fish to their spawning places, as was proven by rectification works in the Romanian part of the Danube Delta.
