Chilka Lake - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Chilka Lake (also Chilika Lake) is a brackish water coastal lake in India's Orissa state, south of the mouth of the Mahanadi River.
The lake was formed due to the silting action of the Mahanadi River, which drains into the northern end of the lake, and the northerly currents in the Bay of Bengal, which have formed a sandbar along the eastern shore leading to the formation of a shallow lagoon.
The area of the lake varies from 1165 km² in the monsoon season to 906 km² in the dry season, and is studded with numerous small islands.

Chilka is a bird watcher’s paradise and visitors are overwhelmed by the spectacular display of color on display, courtesy our avian friends who seem to be at total bliss at the lake.
The most striking aspect about this lake lies in the fact that migratory birds have continued to arrive at their winter home of choice despite fear from experts that events like the 1999 devastating cyclone, the Afghanistan war would stop these feathered friends from coming to Chilka.
The lake is dotted with islands with interesting names such as Kalijai island, Breakfast island, Nalabana (island of reeds), Honeymoon island, Parikud island etc. To visit the islands as well for cruising inside the lake, visitors can avail of the water transport facilities of the 0rissa Tourist Department.

Rediff On The NeT:Proposed restaurant threatens Chilka lake's bio-diversity
Chilka, the largest brackish water lake in Asia, might have escaped the wrath of the super cyclone that struck coastal Orissa recently claiming over 20,000 lives, but its future is now threatened by a proposal of the Orissa Tourism Development Corporation to develop a floating restaurant on its waters.
Chilka, which is host to 149 varieties of fish, 800 species of fauna and 350 species of non-aquatic plants, was already a concern for environmentalists because of heavy siltation, increase in aqua-culture activities and dwindling bio-diversity.
The lake's unique salinity gradient is responsible for its bio-diversity and it could be the first casualty if the floating restaurant becomes a reality.
