Chill Out is a travelogue: the listener is often treated to sounds of cars, trains, boats and planes; recurring sounds, samples and musical themes give the album a sense of place and space.
Chill Out is an album I often go back to, and it always does wonders for me. I never listen to it as background music, but only with headphones, so that I can fully experience all of its details.
Chill Out is not the most spectacular and immediately impressive of ambient albums, but giving up on it after one of two listens would be a grave mistake.

 The KLF
The KLF (Kopyright Liberation Front), more recently known as the K Foundation, also known as The Timelords, furthermore known as The JAMs were one of the seminal bands around the time of the Acid House movement in Britain in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
The album suffered major legal setbacks because of its use of ABBA's Dancing Queen, and Drummond and Cauty were sued and ordered to destroy all remaining copies of the offending record.
KLF also performed a live version of the song, augmented by thrash punk rock band Extreme Noise Terror, at the 1992 Brit Awards ceremony.

Chill Out (album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Chill Out is a seminal 1990 ambient house concept album by The KLF, portraying a mythical night-time journey up the U.S. Gulf Coast from Texas into Louisiana.
Chill Out is a single continuous musical piece comprised of many distinctive parts, each of which either segues into or introduces the next.
The KLF have stated in interviews that the album was recorded in a 44-minute "live" take in their studio, Trancentral, located in the basement of The KLF member Jimmy Cauty's squat in Stockwell, South London.

Chill Out (KLF album) biography .ms   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Chill Out is the title of a seminal 1990 ambient house album by British electronic group The KLF.
The album is composed of sampled music (including Elvis Presley, Fleetwood Mac, Acker Bilk, Glen Campbell and Tuvan throat singers), vocals, sound effects and a sprinkling of original music, notably pedal steel guitar by Graham Lee of the Triffids.
The cover of Chill Out was partly a reference to the cover of Pink Floyd's Atom Heart Mother which features cows, and partly an attempt to establish a pastoral feel reminscent of an early morning in the English countryside after one of the big outdoor raves of the late 80's.

One of the initial works in the ambient house canon, Chill Out is the practically beatless soundtrack to a late-night journey along the Gulf Coast, and the track titles tell much of the story: "Six Hours to Louisiana, Black Coffee Going Cold," "3AM Somewhere Out of Beaumont," "Elvis on the Radio,...

The album was a satiric goodbye to music, voicing Drummond's hope that he would never be involved in the industry again.
A second album, Who Killed the JAMS?, appeared early in 1988, but it was superseded by the May release of "Doctorin' the Tardis" (recorded as the Timelords).
Though the KLF did return one year later, it was not to release music but to provide a commentary on the art world.

Born in Scotland but arriving in the music biz via the 1977 Liverpool scene, Drummond was a founding member of Big in Japan, launched the Zoo label with Dave Balfe and then became the manager of Echo and the Bunnymen and the Teardrop Explodes.
Sounding like an accidental recording of 1970 Pink Floyd sessions during which all the participants have either left or fallen asleep, it's the pleasantly attenuated soundtrack to a non-existent film that is easily forgotten.
Drummond's solo album, The Man, is a tastefully understated country-rock collection of original songs with backing from, among others, nearly all of the Triffids and the Voice of the Beehive.

The general premise (I assumed) of the album was the concept of a night traveler in Texas and Louisiana who picks up various country, Mexican, blues and Bible-belt radio stations, over which the KLF added the typical nocturnal sounds you hear in the countryside (albeit with a few effects, some thunder and atmospheric synths).
Yet despite the absence of danceable rhythms, this album over the years is one of very few that I think captures the ideology and essence of the early 1990s electronic music/rave years, not necessarily as an archive of club hits but more as musical analogy.
Chill Out is not only the best ambient album ever made, it's also one of the best albums ever made.

Not only is this a great ambient album, it's a seminal masterpiece - recorded in 1989 it predates Selected Ambient Works by a few years, and to be honest probably owes more to Brian Eno, having almost no rhythm at all.

More than any pop band in history, the KLF ripped off the music industry for a bucketful of loot and got away with it -- as illustrated in their own guidebook to creating number one singles, The Manual.
Locked out of the group's Stockholm studio, the pair decided to return to England, stopping only to burn 500 copies of 1987 in a Swedish field.
Concurrent to the Chill Out project, Cauty had actually formed another ambient house forerunner, the Orb, with Dr. Alex Paterson.

Each time, if a mistake were made, the KLF would return to the start of the album and record again from scratch.
This is what the KLF are about - a truly groundbreaking album that set the standard for Chill Out music that has in my opinion only ever been neared by Global Communication.

The KLF were without doubt one of the most important bands of the last twenty years- they had a profound effect on dance music in the 1990s, and were the first to use the now-household names "chill-out" and "trance".
Amazingly, The KLF had the knack to produce mediocre tracks for their albums, but fantastic remixes for the songs they released as singles.
When this originally came out I remember a few people were disappointed with it because many of the tracks were a lot more mellow than the singles released.

(The album The White Room, which was released, is entirely different than the Soundtrack.) After that, they put out Chill Out, credited with basically starting the '90s Ambient movement.
In 1992, they quit the music industry in a different way than most people: They played an awards show, where Extreme Noise Terror, a noise metal band played a version of one of their hits, while Bill Drummond fired a machine gun (filled with blanks) into the audience.

They manage to draw a lot of attention to KLF, the logo, the pop entity, via their scams and facetiously over-theatrical "Pops" appearances, while remaining in the shadows, like the Was brothers in Was (Not Was), shunning the notoriety and nuisance of personal fame.
AMONG the myths and preconceptions surrounding KLF (such as they are) that Jimmy and Bill are keen to dispel is the one that, after three hit singles, they're rolling in loot, hence their disposition to shower audiences with Scottish fivers at gigs.
What's great about KLF is that, unlike any of their pop contemporaries, they enjoy twin musical careers above and below ground, on the one hand storming and scaling the charts with the likes of "What Time is Love?", while also producing excellent, ambient, experimental albums like "Chill Out" in the sod-'em spirit of the avant-garde.

Out of these sessions came The KLF album Chill Out, on which Paterson appeared in an uncredited role.
Cauty preferred that albums by The Orb were released on his KLF Communications label, whereas Paterson wanted to avoid becoming an offshoot of The KLF.
Not only did the album receive poor reviews, but The Orb was frequently regarded by the UK press as past the peak years of the creative years, being an "ambient dinosaur" out of place in the current dance music environment.

What is less known about the pair, however, is that through their association with the likes of DJ Alex Paterson their album Chill Out helped turn the ears of the dance music crowd towards ambient strains of house, dub and techno and eventually the formation of Paterson's own group The Orb.
An impressionist soundtrack to an overnight drive through the Deep South of America, Chill Out is clever, surreal and always accessible.
The sheep photo on the album cover, by the way, is a parody of the Floyd's Atom Heart Mother (1970).
