Chiltern Hills - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
The Chiltern Hills are a chalk escarpment that stretches in a south-west to north-east diagonal across several counties of southern England, but is most prominent in Buckinghamshire.
The Chilterns are part of the Southern England Chalk Formation which also includes Salisbury Plain, Cranborne Chase, the Isle of Wight and the South Downs.
This area is also known as the Chiltern Hundreds, an administrative area of convenience used to subvert an archaic rule, which permits a member of parliament, who is not allowed to resign, to apply for tenureship of the Chiltern Hundreds, thus relieving him of his parliamentary duty.

Environmental Management of Roads in the Chilterns: Introduction   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
The proximity of the Chilterns to London, its location between the south east and the midlands and its popularity as a place to live have resulted in a density of roads which is probably unparalleled in an AONB or National Park.
These guidelines are intended to provide guidance on what is the most appropriate means of ensuring the environment and character of the Chilterns are not damaged by management of roads, whilst recognising the statutory and other national standards which have to be observed by highways authorities.
The purpose of designating the Chilterns as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is to ensure that all aspects of natural beauty are conserved and enhanced.

Buntings and larks flock to the Chilterns - The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Nearly 5% of the British population of corn buntings are found in the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and over 1% of linnets live there too, according to a farmland bird survey carried out last year by the RSPB in partnership with the Chilterns Conservation Board.
However, the survey also highlighted the dire position of lapwings and grey partridges in the Chilterns - both were recorded only in very low numbers and are in need of extra effort if they are to be conserved.
The Chilterns has been shown to be a relative stronghold for many farmland birds of national concern; the emphasis now must be maintaining that, whilst focusing efforts on the species and areas that need it most.

 Guardian | Chilterns downgraded
For a century the railways assumed people knew their place, in first, second or third, and it took an act of parliament to put a stop to the uncovered wagons which once carried all but the rich.
Leave aside the suspicion that Chiltern Railways may simply want to continue rail discrimination under a subtler tag - Chiltern Gold, perhaps, or the soft and hard class which kept commissars from the masses in Soviet Russia.
But in the Chilterns at least, common sense has broken out, leaving class distinction, at least for the moment, in the station car park.
