He was sent to the king at Oxford both in 1643 and 1644 to negotiate terms, and the secret communications with Charles on the latter occasion were the foundation of a charge of treason brought against Whitelocke and Denzil Holies (q.v.) later.
Later in the autumn, and perhaps in consequence, Whitelocke was despatched on a mission to Christina, queen of Sweden, to conclude a treaty of alliance and assure the freedom of the Sound.
On his return he resumed his office as commissioner of the Great Seal, was appointed a commissioner of the treasury with a salary of 1000, and was returned to the parliament of 1654 for each of the four constituencies of Bedford, Exeter, Oxford and Buckinghamshire, electing to sit for the latter constituency.

Before 1550 it passed to the Crokes by purchase, from the family of Zouche: it was again alienated in or about 1682, and having been successively in the families of Limbrey and Hervey, passed to the Carters, and is now, by marriage with the heiress of that family, the property of Sir John Aubrey bart.
At the west end of the church is a large marble monument for the family of Carter: on the south side of the entrance into the chancel was a stone desk and pulpit; the desk remains, with the steps which led to the pulpit.
At Easington, a considerable hamlet of this parish, was formerly a chapel of ease.

The CHILTON Pedigree LDS film # 0087051 has a notation with John's name which says " John CARTER - her brother's footman who carried her from Harraton in a post chaise 3 Oct 1750 and married her at Mayfair Chapel." In other words they eloped because she was Aristocrocy and he was a footman.
He died when his son John Chilton Lambton CARTER "was a lad" and in 1796 the 32nd was sent to the West Indies in December.
