During the Sican period a greater and more extensive culture is evolving a little way down the coast, again among descendants of the Mochica inhabitants of these regions.
Descendants of the Mochicha develop a culture known as Sican, in the Lambayeque area of northern Peru.

 lambayeque

Dense overall decoration and narrative scenes, as on this beaker, are unusual in Lambayeque art; overall decoration is more frequently seen on later Chimú works, though usually in the form of repeated motifs.
Given the presence of the many fantastic creatures and composite beings, it is reasonable to assume that cosmological views and mythic episodes are depicted.

 Peru : Pre-Inca Cultures
Other cultures that thrived during the same period were the Chachapoyas, who constructed the impressive Kuélap fortress in the northern highlands, the Ica (or Chincha) south of Lima, and the altiplano (high plains) groups that built the finely crafted chullpa towers near Puno and Lake Titicaca.
The Chimú were the dominant culture in Peru before the arrival and expansion of the Incas, and they initially represented a great northern and coastal rivalry to the Incas.
The most spectacular remnant of this culture, known for its advances in stone carving, pottery, weaving, and metallurgy, is the Chavín de Huántar temple, 40km (25 miles) east of Huaraz.

The Chavín culture, dating from around 900 BC, has long been considered the first civilization of south America.
The Mochica, centred upon Moche on the north coast of Peru, are known in particular for brilliantly realistic pottery sculpture - usually depictions of human heads (possibly even portraits), functioning as jugs with stirrup-shaped spouts emerging from the top.
Sophisticated architecture (pyramids and raised platforms) suggests complex societies, and carbon-14 dating reveals that they were in existence by around 3000 BC - contemporary with the beginnings of civilization in Mesopotamia and Egypt.
