This moving debut from the young and highly lauded Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie follows the coming-of-age of a 15-year-old girl named Kambili, whose affluent Nigerian family is ruled by a staunchly Catholic father.
Nicknamed "Omelora" (one who does for the community) by those around him, he is a respected member of the church, a celebrated philanthropist, and the publisher of a politically active newspaper.
Adichie weaves a powerfully unsentimental tale that never lapses into triteness or stereotypes.

With all short story collections, not everyone is going to like everything in the group, but I did find that for the most part I was pleasantly surprised.
By far, the best was "The Shell Collector." This story's form and pacing was reminiscent of other great short stories out there (think McCrae's stories in "The Bark of the Dogwood.") Others worth mentioning are "What Went Wrong"--Tim O'Brien; "The American Embassy"--Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie; and "Kissing"--William Kittredge.
The other stories worth reading are by: Robyn Joy Leff, Marjorie Kemper, Tom Johnston, Tim O'Brien, and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.
