CPMV is a picornavirus-like plant virus with a diameter of 30 nm.
Cowpea mosaic virus (CPMV) is especially suitable for exploitation beyond traditional approaches because of the structural knowledge, availability of infectious clones, stability, programmability by genetic engineering, and ease in production of the virus.
Its structure was determined to near-atomic resolution by using both monochromatic and Laue x-ray crystallography.

Alteration of V3 loop context within the envelope of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 enhances neutralization.
Competition analysis revealed that enhanced neutralization by human HIV-positive sera of the chimera was attributable in some cases to better reactivity with the linear V3 loop epitope but in others to conformational loop epitopes or previously cryptic or poorly recognized epitopes outside the loop region.
MN V3 loop-specific monoclonal antibodies were better able to recognize the chimeric virus compared with MN, staining a greater percentage of infected cells and exhibiting slight increases in relative affinity with a concomitant increase in neutralization titer.

In Greek mythology, the chimera was a monster that combined the parts of a goat, a lion and a serpent.
Diseases that hop species barriers can be particularly devastating because the immune systems of their new hosts are so unprepared for them (the flu pandemic of 1918 is widely believed to have sprung from an avian influenza virus).
Unless they are to do those risky first experiments in humans, they will need the freedom to test in animals and thereby make chimeras.

ARS Publication request: Crystal Structure of a Human Rhinovirus Type 14 (Hrv14): Human Immuno Deficiency Virus Type 1 (Hiv-1) V3 Loop Chimeric Virus That Induces Neutralizing Antibodies Against Hiv-1.
To gain a better understanding of what the chimeric virus looks like, a technique called X-ray crystallography was used to determine the three- dimensional structure of the HRV14:HIV chimera.
In this way the piece of HIV that was transplanted onto the rhinovirus can be seen and a better understanding of how this region may act in HIV and affect the ability of the virus to infect different types of cells.
These new viruses are called chimeric rhinoviruses (HRV:HIV-1) because they are mostly rhinovirus but have a part of a protein that makes up HIV on its surface.

Doctor Who Novellas: The Eye of the Tyger by Paul McAuley - an infinity plus review
The story sees the Doctor arriving aboard a colony spaceship in crisis as he seeks to find a cure for Fyne, an English gentleman from early 20th century India, who is infected with a virus that is transforming his body "into a chimera of man and Tyger".
As well as the Doctor saving Earth from the tyger-virus (told entirely in flashback), and changes both physical and in character in Fyne, there is an almost fairy-tale romance, the civil war aboard the ship, the mystery of the black hole and more.
The Doctor has visited the location before, albeit in the future, so some of the loose ends seem to be deliberately making room for a sequel/prequel, but this doesn't stop it from being a greatly enjoyable story in its own right.
