The news follows a weekend of discussions about what to do after Northwest's flight attendants, by an 80% vote, rejected a contract that would have cut their wages 21% and would have eroded compensation further through higher medical costs and longer work hours.
With ramp workers ratifying a cost-cutting deal Friday saving the airline $87 million a year, Northwest has renegotiated concessionary contracts with nearly all of its work groups, as it tries to cut $1.4 billion a year in labor costs.

China Southern Airlines on Tuesday posted a surprise loss for the second half of 2004, as costs soared, making it the only major Chinese airline to fall into the red last year.
China Southern reported a net loss of 314.18 million yuan (USD$38 million) for the six months to December 31 versus a profit of 873.61 million yuan (USD$105.6 million) for the year-earlier period as soaring fuel and other costs offset strong passenger growth.
China Southern operated 542 routes as at end-2004, of which 434 were domestic, 85 international and 23 Hong Kong regional.

Flight attendants, meanwhile, agreed not to strike until at least 15 days after Northwest imposes terms.

Baggage handlers voted down Northwest's wage-cut proposal, and a trial is set to begin in bankruptcy court May 15 to determine whether Northwest can throw out that contract and impose its own terms.
Flight attendants will be voting through June 6 on their own wage-cut proposal.

Comments: True, this red-eye flight was scheduled to depart at 10pm arriving LAX at 5am; true it left on time arriving slightly ahead of schedule; true the cabin crew was cheerful and efficient and the cabin clean and fresh.
My buddy who I met in London flew in from Chicago and had the same meal choices on his flight said the beef that he picked was not very good.
