The medal recognizes service in the China Relief Expedition which was conducted by the United States Army at the turn on the 20th century during the Boxer Rebellion.
To be awarded the China Campaign Medal, a service member must have performed military duty in China, between the dates of June 20, 1900 and May 27, 1901, with such duty being in service of the China Relief Expedition.
The United States Navy equivalent of the China Campaign Medal was the China Relief Expedition Medal.

The Philippine Campaign Medal for the Navy and Marine Corps was authorized in 1908.
A campaign medal was designed for each Theater, and participation in designated battles or campaigns was designated by the use of small campaign stars (rather than bars as was the case for the WW I Victory Medal) affixed to the medal and service ribbons.
The Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal was authorized on November 6, 1942 for service in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater as a regularly assigned member of a unit or vessel between December 7,1941 and March 2, 1946.

The medal will be awarded to individual who shall have been attached to, present, and serving on permanent duty with an organization of the naval service of the United States credited by the Secretary of the Navy with having participated in operations in China.
Services performed in the Asiatic-Pacific area between 3 September 1945 and 2 March 1946, inclusive, shall not be credited toward individual eligibility for the China Service Medal unless the individual is already eligible for the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal for services performed prior to 2 September 1945.
The China Service Medal shall not be awarded for any service for which another service medal is authorized except as provided in paragraph 2 above and not more than one medal shall be awarded to any individual.
