  First Electric Railway in Northeast China Open to Traffic
As electric railway enables trains to run faster and cause less pollution to the environment than traditional ones that use diesel locomotives, China plans to add another 8,000 kilometers of electric railroad to its railway system in the coming five years.
China's first passenger-only railway, linking Shenyang, capital of northeast China's Liaoning Province, and Qinhuangdao, a port city in northern Hebei Province, began operation on Sunday.
The new line is expected to relieve the burden on railway transport in north and northeast China, and to stimulate economic development in northeast China and areas along the Bohai Bay, said Liu Youmei, an academician with the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

Kwantung originally meant "east of Shanhaiguan", a reference to part of the city of Qinhuangdao (in today's Hebei province of the People's Republic of China), wherein lies the eastern end of the Great Wall of China.
The 550 mile Southern spurline of Manchurian Railway was constructed from both ends at Port Arthur and Harbin starting work in 1895 shorty after the Triple Intervention, and well before the Kwantung lease was signed in 1895.
A new lease agreement was contracted between Japan and the government of Manchukuo, and Japan retained the territory apart from the nominally-independent Manchukuo until its final defeat of World War II in 1945.
