Traditions of Mexico - La China Poblana
La China Poblana, an Asian woman who lived in Puebla, came to Mexico in 1620 as a servant and left her mark on the traditions of the Spanish colonial region with her clothing.
Mirrha (La China Poblana) is believed to have been bought by Miguel de Sosa, who baptized the eleven-year-old "Chinese girl" and gave her the Christian name Catarina de San Juan.
They say it is widely known and handed down through local tradition that the people admired the girl, La China Poblana, for her generosity and exotic beauty, and they honored her by wearing her dress style.

Women wear the "China Poblana," a female servant outfit of the early to mid 1800's.
Many legends have been attached to the china (pronounced "sheena") outfit, including the romantic story about the oriental princess sold as a slave in the city of Puebla, who then fell in love with a Creole.
The modern China Poblana's outfit is so saturated with sequins that the historic "castor" fabric (which is only made in Puebla and Mexico City today) can only be seen if you turn the skirt inside out.

From this time, Catarina enjoyed the pious estimation of good part of the poblana society and counted on the support of the sanctioned Company of Jesus as well as on the one of other clergymen.
