  China Service Medal
The medal will be awarded to individual who shall have been attached to, present, and serving on permanent duty with an organization of the naval service of the United States credited by the Secretary of the Navy with having participated in operations in China.
Service in a passenger status, or as an observer, visitor, courier, escort, inspector or other similar status when not permanently attached to an eligible unit, is not creditable toward eligibility for the above medal.
Services performed in the Asiatic-Pacific area between 3 September 1945 and 2 March 1946, inclusive, shall not be credited toward individual eligibility for the China Service Medal unless the individual is already eligible for the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal for services performed prior to 2 September 1945.

The Yangtze Service Medal is a decoration of the United States military which was created in 1930 for presentation to members of the U.S. Navy and United States Marine.

This was awarded for service during the "Amethyst Incident" in which a British Destroyer, the HMS Amethyst, was trapped for a period in the Yangtze by Communist troops as they were on the verge of winning the Civil War.
It originally covered service during the 1937 Japanese invasion through 1939, but was extended to cover relevant service through the end of WWII, and was also awarded for Cold War Service along the China coast through the late 50's.

One of the few officers of any service who had commanded a platoon, a company, a battalion, a regiment and a division under fire, he served as the 19th Commandant of the Marine Corps from January, 1948, until January, 1952.
He won the Navy Cross, Army Distinguished Service Cross and an Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a second Distinguished Service Cross for heroism in the Bouresches and Belleau Wood fighting, where he was both gassed and wounded.
