China Telecom's net profit for the six months ended June was 9.26 billion yuan -- a figure that would have been 30 percent higher if the six networks to be acquired were included.
China Telecom had said previously it planned to buy the networks in the six provinces, and is following an acquisition route taken by several state-run Chinese firms, including both China Mobile and China Unicom, to expand by buying assets from a parent company.
The network areas to be acquired have a population of 303 million, which would give China Telecom a total population coverage of 524 million, or 40.8 percent of China's total population as of the end of 2002.

China Telecom Ltd sources said the company is to spare no effort in purchasing more assets from its parent.
China Telecom Ltd made a similar purchase in October last year by acquiring six provincial networks from its parent for 46 billion yuan (US$5.56 billion), bringing its number of city and provincial networks to 10.

China's largest fixed-line phone operator, China Telecom Corp Ltd, Wednesday posted a better-than-expected 2003 net profit of 24.69 billion yuan (US$2.98 billion), up 153 percent from the previous year, benefiting from its solid growth in wireless and broadband businesses.
As a matter of fact, both China Telecom and its rival, China Netcom, have spent billions of dollars over the last two years to roll out their PAS and broadband networks.
