  Moongate: Bigger Than Chinagate, Koreagate
Following the 1996 Presidential elections, the Radical Right in America launched a wild campaign against President Bill Clinton, charging him with having been "bought off" by Beijing, via clandestine campaign contributions from corporate fronts for the People's Liberation Army (PLA).
Nothing much came of the wildly exaggerated "Chinagate" allegations, save a handful of Federal prosecutions of foreign influence peddlers, trying to buy a night at the Lincoln Bedroom at the White House.
However, some of the very Radical Rightists who led the charge against President Clinton and promoted the "Chinagate" scandal, including the not-so-reverend Jerry Falwell, are emerging as the biggest recipients of illegal money from Reverend Moon and his offshore dirty money empire.

Since the W-88 data was the top concern of the espionage investigation and had allegedly been compromised before Clinton took office, some journalists might have wondered how Clinton and Gore could have swapped the secrets for campaign cash in 1996.
Chinagate encountered more trouble in June when a review by the President's Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board -- chaired by former Sen. Warren Rudman, R-N.H. -- concluded that the spying probably was less than "widely publicized." Other findings judged that suspicions had unfairly settled on Wen Ho Lee because of his Chinese heritage.
Meanwhile, right-wing organizations still see Chinagate as a kind of nuclear hot button for getting the faithful to open their wallets.

Chinagate is the name given to allegations that communist Chinese agents funded the Clinton campaign, and in return, Clinton and Gore are selling out US interests to China through special treatment in foreign and domestic policy matters, and even in allowing spies to obtain classified technology.
Chinagate is likely to tar Al Gore in the upcoming Presidential election race, no matter which Republican faction's nominee runs.
Four questions concerning Chinagate from the American Conservative Union survey letter, distributed at the 1998 Christian Coalition conference, provide a summary of the allegations and illustrate how direct mail fundraising surveys both educate and build a constituency:

In an investigation originally instigated by the CIA, the FBI was beginning its search for the source of the leak of W-88 nuclear warhead technology to China among the more than 1,000 people who had access to the secrets.

With Clinton acquitted by the Senate, the Republicans and the news media were eager for another “Clinton scandal.” To get this fix, they brushed aside the inconvenient timing of the lost secrets from the 1980s and mixed together the suspicions about Chinese spying and allegations of Chinese campaign donations in 1996.
During those chaotic first weeks of “Chinagate,” pundits virtually never noted the logical impossibility of Democrats selling secrets to China in 1996 when China apparently had obtained those secrets a decade or so earlier during a Republican administration.

As you will read below, the ChinaGATE 1 "Scandal" was actually an outgrowth of a partisan Republican effort to "tar" the Clinton Administration and the Democratic Party with the accusation that the Chinese government was attempting to buy influence with that Administration and that political party.
The only press coverage of ChinaGATE 1 during the Bush Administration evidently appeared in a SINGLE Washington Post article on the Bush "Scandals" by Michael Isikoff on July 4, 1992 during the 1992 presidential campaign.
To place the ChinaGATE scandal of 1998 into perspective, we should recall that the CEO of only one major U.S. aerospace company, Bernard Schwartz of Loral Space Systems, made major political contributions to the Democratic Party alone.
