Chinatowns were formed in the 19th century in many areas of the United States and Canada as a result of discriminatory land laws that forbade the sale of any land to Chinese or restricted the land sales to a limited geographical area and which promoted the segregation of people of different ethnicities.
Chinatowns in Asia are widespread with a large concentration of overseas Chinese in Southeast Asia and ethnic Chinese whose ancestors came from southern China - particularly the provinces of Guangdong, Fujian, and Hainan - and settled in countries such as Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam...

Outside of that headline, the condition of New York City's Chinatown has been little reported by mainstream media outlets in the U.S. One reason, besides the constant obvious lack of Asian representation in the media, may be the Asian American community's strong tradition of insularity and self-reliance.

NEW YORK (CNN) - New York City's Chinatown is suffering economically because of fear of SARS and lingering effects from the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, a business group said Monday.
At a news conference in the Chinatown restaurant Sweet and Tart, the president of the AABDC, John Wang, stressed the need for education of the prevention of SARS.
According to the New York City Department of Health, there are no reported cases of SARS from Chinatown or the Flushing section of Queens, which is also heavily Asian.
