 A Gift From The Sea
Barely seven miles long and one and a half miles wide, Chincoteague is located four miles off the eastern shore of the Chesapeake Bay and sheltered from the unforgiving sea by its larger neighbor, Assateague, which measures 37 miles in length.
Chincoteague and Assateague had hitherto only been accessible by boat, but the influx of people spurred natives to build a causeway and bridges connecting them to the mainland in 1922.
Although the Chincoteague Pony was a popular area attraction, it was not until Marguerite Henry, a well-known author and lifelong equestrienne, visited the island in 1946 that the breed gained national recognition.

Legend has it that the ponies on Assateague are survivors of a Spanish galleon that sank on its way to Mexico during a storm off the coast of the island though it is more likely that they are descendants of farmer's horses who escaped from Virginia farms.
In 1962, a major Nor'easter winter storm, the Ash Wednesday Storm, struck Chincoteague and Assateague Islands.
Possibly due to a combination of publicity from the Misty books and movie and the damage from the 1962 storm, most of Assateague Island was preserved from development as Assateague Island National Seashore in 1965.

First published in 1947, this Newbery Honor Award winner is the story of two children living on an island off the Virginia coast who claim one of the wild mares and her pony auctioned at the annual Pony Penning Day.
Henry went to Chincoteague Island in search of a story and based it on real people and horses she met there.
She actually bought Misty, and later Misty and her colt Stormy (also the subject of a book in 1963) appeared at benefits to raise money when a hurricane hit the islands.
