The literal meaning of Chin-lung is ‘the cave or the hole of the Chin’, the same meaning as the Burmese word for Chindwin, as in ‘Chindwin River’, also ‘the hole of the Chin’ or ‘the river of the Chin’ (Lehman 1963: 20).
Before the Chin settled in the Chindwin Valley, kingdoms of the Mon and the Pye existed in the major river valley of Burma, Sak or Thet and Kandu in Upper Burma, and also the Shan in the eastern country, but no one occupied the Chindwin Valley until the Chin made their home there.
After their original settlement in the Chindwin Valley was destroyed by the flood, according to the traditional account, the Chin moved to the Upper Chindwin, and some groups such as the Asho went as far as the Pandaung Hills and other hills near the western part of the Chindwin River.

The villages on the West side of Chindwin river are the most affected by the pollution because the trucks carrying the concentrate go back and forth on the ferry by the river and so leakage goes into the water, while on the East side, the concentrate is transported by train.

An additional 16 hatchlings were brought down from the Upper Chindwin River, part of 88 hatchlings from 8 nests/200 eggs collected from the last know nesting population.
We began hearing last year of a planned dam on the Upper Chindwin that would likely flood the last remaining know breeding population of this rare and highly endangered turtle and had been working under what we thought was a ten year time frame.
Thought to be extinct in Indochina, a remnant breeding population was rediscovered on the Sre Ambel River in 2001 and has been the subject of intensive conservation measures including nest beach protection, public awareness aimed at local fishermen and river patrols.
